Shabaka Hutchins & The Ancestors
Sonny Blows the Blues away on tis APO 45 RPM edition, with solid support from Lou Levy, Leroy Vinegar, and Mel Lewis. Hymnal Blues with a strong bass line and Lou Levy’s piano work is a standout.
Very fine sound on Tidal. After listening to Seed Ensemble’s Driftglass I am looking forward to hearing more from this young alto saxophonist, Cassie Kinoshi:
@weedeewop graciously shared some of his treasured albums with me as I being rebuilding my collection.
Here is a classic that I listen to regularly via Qobuz.
Now I’m a proud owner of the album as well.
Codona 2. A new one for me. I really enjoyed the use of Sitar, trumpet, along with percussion on this album.
Dave Douglas “Dizzy Atmosphere”
I like this one a little more each time i spin it.
@Lonson, you got me thinking so I went to the source first:
Groovin’ High, Hot House, and Dizzy Atmosphere featured on this rather short compilation cd. Superb performances for each of the three. Moving along on this set is Alice Roberts on He Beeped When He Should Have Bopped, a real gas!
This is a Dizzy Atmosphere I can relate to. Dave Douglas’s version, just does not light me up, must be missing something. I’d cut it some slack it it weren’t for the Dizzy reference. Just my opinion mind you.
I admit I stuck with Douglas’ and it paid off I do like it more and more.
Similar to Maria Schneider’s Data Lords, Dave Douglas’s more recent offerings just don’t engage me. His early items with John Zorn, and the Stargazer period I like quite a bit. Both Dave and Maria sound as though they are over reaching. I really wanted to like it. This one just isn’t for me. There is just too much out there that I prefer. Glad you enjoy it.
That’s cool. I actually like later Dave more than earlier Dave. I suspect we have some fundamental preference differences, which is cool.
Right now
I had to hear more Ellington, last listen of the day:
Japanese cd from last century.
I would tend to agree, our tastes diverge. No problem, keeps things interesting.
Full house. All super stars!
I have tried to like Maria Schneider many times, but I can never get emotionally involved with her compositions. Sigh,
You’re not alone.
Another share from @weedeewop
I really enjoy Tyner’s piano on some of Coltrane’s work. I’ve not had a chance to hear his solo work on vinyl, so this one is a real treat that I’m sure will be in my shorter list of albums I listen to month to month. Thank you.
