I believe it was recorded with one microphone. I like the sound because the performances are brilliant!
I’m streaming it at the moment on Qobuz, as your post triggered my curiosity. The LP is sitting at the door at our summer cottage, and I’m at our primary residence working with a contractor.
I’ve made it through My Favorite Things and When Lights are low. My initial impressions are Coltrane’s and Dolphy’s performances on the first two are tracks are worth the price of admission alone. Sonically it sounds like stacked mono, with the drum kit, especially cymbals too forward for my taste. I wish I could hear more of McCoy’s piano work and Art Davis’ or Reggie’s bass lines. Minor complaints but one can wish. I’d like to think Coltrane, and especially Dolphy fans will be more than happy with this “find”.
I’ll add as Eric and John drop out and McCoy kicks supported by Elvin and either Art or Reggie it sounds fine typical of live recordings from the very early 60’s
Last night, I thought most of the drums were too far forward.
My initial impression as well. Discogs lists mastering and lacquer cut by KR, Kevin Reeves. Not familiar with Kevin Reeves. Also, Discogs is showing USA issued vinyl “Made in Mexico”, I’m hoping for clean flat vinyl. I ordered the CD as well, just in case.
EDIT:
Turns out Kevin Reeves did Coltrane’s Live in Seattle as well, I hear a preference for the drum kit in both. Not knowing what he had to work with, and that it was recorded with one ribbon microphone he may not have had too many options.
Under rated IMO.
I agree and the CD via the CDT3 Mk3 or the CDT2 MK3 outshines the Qobuz version.
Yeah, as my CDT 2 Mk3 is at the Lake House! Either way I figure I’m covered. BTW Eric and John are killing it on Greensleeves. Oh to have been in the audience for these sets.
Vandermark Trio from 1999 on Delmark with John Barry and Tim Mulvena, covering Monk, Sun Ra, Coleman, and Cherry.
Disc 2, mostly the interesting album “Sonny’s Crib” with Coltrane, Byrd, Clark, Fuller, Chambers and Taylor.
Truly enjoy Sonny Clark, having the majority of his Blue Note LPs. Sonny’s Crib is a winner!
Yes, none of this is new to me at all, I have every session, most in more than one version. But I love what Mosaic has done. with their mastering on these recent sets and they have become my favored digital versions.
This is a recent release at $99 it is a bargain. Not sure I want to duplicate what I have, but it is tempting. For Sonny Clark fans solidly in the CD camp this set is an easy recommendation. I have a few Sonny Clark reissues on Music Matters and Tone Poet as well, most welcome to these ears.
