Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 2)

Picked up an LP at Dusty Groove Friday, Lage Lund Ashes featuring Tyshawn Sorey and Matthew Brewer. This fine sounding ensemble has been released on the J.M.I. label. Thanks for the recommendation

EDIT:
Nothing like a double post, oh well. Not sure how that happened…

Picked up this at the same time, solo baritone saxophone, James Carter Un. Not Colin Stetson, but a fun listen. Maybe I should follow-up with Serge Chalof.

They are not afraid to do solo horns or even mix and match interesting styles. I have one by them and its Helen Sung, a piano player doing tunes with a trumpet player - thats it, no other instruments. And it works well

We get a fair amount of that on the Chicago scene, Dave Rempis doing solo Bari, for instance. Jim Baker and Ed Wilkerson doing duos,… I like the J.M.I. aesthetic, they seem to step back and put the reins in the musician’s hands.

Just arrived today, new ‘Classic Vinyl Series’ reissue.

I missed out on the Music Matters 45 set, so I guess this is the consolation prize, still sounds great, with less effort.

Regardless it is a great set!

Listening to disc 2/2 of this fine Dexter Gordon Quartet Live in Chateauvallon 1978 , with George Cables, Rufus Reid, and Eddie Gladden. Dexter and George are in especially fine form.

To answer a question no one asked: A friend brought over his new UHQR 45 version and we compared it to my already excellent Analogue Productions 33.
Sound is elevated more than any fuse I ever bought.
So, to soothe the sting of having too low a cc balance, I ordered one.

I wish the UHQR packages were slimmer, as I prefer the Music Masters/Tone Poet tip on gatefold sleeves. Then there is the price of the UHQRs. Nice to know the Ballads UHQR is a winner.

I am enjoying this Blue Note soul jazz reissue a lot. Sound is good with a nice wide sound stage and reasonable center fill.

I agree about the packaging. I just put the albums in my LP rack and the empty cases fill unused space in my component rack (hiding cables). I read the booklets and other paraphernalia once. It’s all a complete waste imo. Keep it all and charge half the price.

Well said.
