Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 2)

Sonny Rollins’ East Broadway run down is an important later Rollins session. As it is a freer sound for Rollins, some may not fully appreciate the change in direction, especailly core Rollins fans. At times I find him to meander a bit on the title track. Freddie Hubbard steals the show so to speak on the title track. Following the release of East Broadway Run Down Sonny took a 6 year hiatus from recording.

I should mention East Broadway Run Down is due for a Verve Acoustic Sounds LP reissue mid-August.

Regarding the recent 2024 RSD LP release of Sonny Rollins Freedom Weaver, I’d sugest no hesitation in acquiring a copy. I sure enjoy mine.

The Tone Poet LP is a fine sonic improvement over my 1971 Blue Note reissue.

The Great Jazz Trio featuring Hank Jones, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. Both Live at the Village Vanguard LPs are worth seeking out as is New Wine in Old Bottles, adding Jackie McLean.

Regarding The Great Jazz Trio, I’d be remiss in not mentioning yet another fine release, Some Day My Prince Will Come. This time substituting brother Elvin Jones, and the impeccable Richard Davis. The LP is rather rare (pricey).

My copy just arrived, the first time I’ve owned it on vinyl. So far I’ve been extremely happy with the Tone Poet lps I’ve purchased.

I have found the Tone Poet pressings to be close to immaculate. IMO, they beat the Acoustic Sounds pressings of the Verve remasters. Just saying.

Listening now, and yes the sound if fine for a 1970 live performance. Always enjoy Rahsaan.

Check out the “Hey Jude” riffs in the middle of “Volunteered Slavery.”

Tone Poets in general tend to be outstanding. I have the majority of the releases. Several have had severe lip/edge warps, compound warps, and were dished. The warps were so severe as to interfere with the tone arm, argh! Fortunately a friend has been able to correct them with a Furutech DF-2 LP. My understanding is the ORB DF-01iA is similarly effective at a lesser cost.

That said I have yet to receive a playable/listenable Doug Watkins Watkins at Large LP. Noisy side(s) or excessive compound warps. Multiple ultrasonic cleanings only resulted in the surface noise becoming more intrusive. A fifth copy is due in this weekend, fingers crossed.

IME all pressing sources are fallible, with some having better quality standards, as mentioned both Tone Poet and APO fall in this category.

Speaking of good-sounding reissues……one of my favorite Coletrane albums from Rhino High Fidelity.
