Early stereo jazz and channel separation…

My listening is heavily weighted to middle to late 1950s jazz. I’ve found that many recordings with two or maybe three lead instruments have them panned hard left, center if three, and hard right.

It seems unnatural to have the soundstage so wide, and it occurred to me that the master tapes may have been done that way because of the limited channel separation of the LP, the primary medium of the time.

Are the current digital releases of these recordings (I’m nearly 100% Qobuz) left this way out of neglect, because nobody thought about it, for copyright reasons, or the catch-all, “none of the above”.

FYI, I’m currently listening to Bill Evans “Portrait in Jazz” and the bassist is relegated to far stage left.
