It was my first album of Jazz, I purchase!
It was recommended by a DJ/store owner, that after I ask for a local jazzmen CD, told me:
how many Jazz you have, my answer, I saw his show last night, and loved what i heard.
His answer was: it is fun, but you will appreciate Jazz from master not apprentice!
So I ask, what he suggest than? he replied with “Bill Evans, Waltz for Debby”. I purchase that one, and listen it all week long!
I never purchase the CD of the show, but, this guy fill me in Jazz discovery for 6 months! then time went ruff for me, new job! and when I get back 8 month later for new Jazz CD, the store was gone!
I ask lady, where is the store, did he move? she reply, well maybe he sell to cheap, cause he’s gone!
this guy change my life, and I could not thank him!
I learn later, that he had invest all his money in the store and big store sell cheap there jazz record until his store die and than skyrock there price after he close!
Anyway, this album follow me, and I listen an average of one or two time a month! This guy knew jazz, like is life depend on it!

the thing is, it was mostly recorded in the afternoon, and they even had a power surge!
also the all you can ear version, is fun to listen! I have about 6 or 7 version of that included the box set in lp’s sound better than the CD’s

And as strange as it is, it’s my other kid, that turn to be a musician! and not liking at all listening music, but playing, that he does every day! always mute music when he did!

Arrived last night and I picked up out of my package box this morning. . . wow, been waiting for this.
Miles Davis “Miles '56” Prestige/Concord 3 cd set, disc 1 playing now.
This set starts off with the final recording of Miles with Sonny Rollins (and Tommy Flanagan and Paul Chambers and Art Taylor) and then moves into the recordings with the Quintet with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones.
The sound here is excellent–remastered by Paul Blackmore and restored utilizing the Plangent Process. I’ve many versions of this music and the music transcends any mastering. . . but I would put this right up there with my favorite versions that I have owned which are the XRCD24 lp facsimile cd releases of the First Great Quintet material.
A great addition to the 100th birthday Miles Davis reissue release series from labels.

What a great story. Honestly, I enjoyed reading about the record store owner almost as much as I did reading about Waltz for Debby.
It’s amazing how one person can change the direction of your musical life with a single recommendation. You walked in looking for a local jazz musician and walked out with one of the greatest jazz albums ever recorded. Sounds like that owner wasn’t just selling records—he was creating jazz listeners.
The part that really got me was how the album became part of your family’s story. Having one child fall asleep to it every night and another grow up to be a musician is something special. Music has a way of weaving itself into our lives like that.
And your description of the owner knowing jazz “like his life depended on it” paints a picture I think many of us recognize. Sadly, a lot of those small independent record stores disappeared, but the people who ran them often left a lasting mark on the customers they inspired.
As for Waltz for Debby, I never seem to get tired of it either. No matter how many times I hear it, there is always something new in Bill Evans’ touch, Scott LaFaro’s bass playing, or the atmosphere of the room itself. It’s one of those rare albums that becomes an old friend rather than just another record on the shelf.

I don’t remember which album but there were a cassette recording of a demo that bill sent to the bass Player For a project that will never be!

Elias married Marc Johnson in 1999, who plays bass in her band and co-produces her recordings.[7]
In 1978, Johnson joined pianist Bill Evans in what would be Evans’s last trio. Johnson toured and recorded with Evans until the death of the pianist in 1980.[1] In 2007 he released the tribute album Something For You—a tribute to Evans—together with his wife, pianist Eliane Elias.[2]
Just an update note: for some reason my order for the new Elias cd went astray. . . it was delayed a few days and now they are saying they will provide me a delivery ETA when they have one. Sigh. Plenty to listen to in the meantime.
