Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 3)

Lou Donaldson Up has been bumped for later, Kimura/Hemingway is a compelling listen.

Recent remaster of a 1976 live set recorded in Milan.

One of my favorite trios, amazing music and great sound.

Another excellent trio set released on ECM in 1977.

Paul Motian Trio ‘Dance’ with bassist David Izenzon and Charles Brackeen on tenor/soprano saxes.

I had forgotten that I have this one on the Pausa label. Most likely in a box up north. Must locate it for a listen.

1970 to early 1980 were ECM’s golden years IMO. I was huge on their releases and most likely have every one of them, naturally on vinyl.

Streaming this on Qobuz (192k !!) one of the many recently remastered Strata East titles, recorded in 1968.

Some nice interplay between Brackeen and Don Cherry. I love Ed Blackwell.

Strata East originals are hard to come by so these remasters are a treat. Don’t know how many they will release on vinyl.

They are an easy recommendation, just note the sonics can be all over the map.

The Brackeen set sounded pretty darn good..not a modern-sounding recording, but not as bad as I was expecting. Apparently Charles Tolliver is proud of the sound of the Strata East releases, they wanted to release a good product.

Lots of obscure stuff I am discovering in these reissues. Finding any of the original releases in decent shape will be tough, so I may buy some of the reissues as downloads. Mack Avenue needs to be supported!

Very cool new release from Ches Smith’s Clone Row band…

Ches Smith - drums, vibes, electronics
Mary Halvorson - guitar (right channel)
Liberty Ellman - guitar (left channel)
Nick Dunston - bass, electronics

Mary Halvorson and Liberty Ellman, good grief.

The guitar work here is astonishing, everything from electronica to traditional picking,

I think Ches is getting his game back.

I REALLY like this. I’m pretty stoned right now, but I’ll bet I like it tomorrow.

The Mack Avenue reissues are a nice sonic improvement generally speaking.

This set was released over 10 years ago, and I’ve listened to it dozens of times since then.

I continue to return to it, great stuff!

John Zorn’s masterful interpretation of Ennio Moricone’s film scores, The Big Gun Down.

Nice nudge I shall return to it later today.

A great set, I’m going to order the 2-disc vinyl and cross my fingers.

Cecil Taylor/Tony Oxley - ‘Flashing Spirits’…

Brand new cd, recorded live in England in 1988. Another wonderful set from this wonderful duo. Really well recorded, too.
