Apparently this record label has a five disc series of the complete works of Pepper Adams–but I can only find this on discogs and a sampler disc.
Listening to “Tale of the Fisherman” by Atzko Kohashi and Tony Overwater from the album “A Drum Thing” while the Pass Labs XA60.8’s stare back at me!
A relatively recent Sam Records reissue that does not disappoint. Lester Young le dernier massage. Featuring Rene Urtreger, Jimmy Gourley, Jamil Nasser, Kenny Clarke. Bright and cheery, perfect for a morning listen.
Tracking Angle on le dernier message
Sadly, Lester’s last session. The Tracking Angle article brings better understanding to the Bertrand Tavernier film Round Midnight featuring Dexter Gordon.
Highly recommend Joel Lyssarides for a quiet late evening listen. The tracks Denial and Meditation are well worth a listen!
Nicely packaged 3-lp retrospective. Sounds better on vinyl than the cds, they should re-release her whole catalog.
Would be nice on LP all the way through The Thompson Fields, she lost me with Data Lords. I just can not relate to her vision.
Monk’s Music: I found a Jazz Wax copy on my shelf. Compared to the version in the AP Riverside box set, the JW sounds like a toy.
Terrific cd, recorded live in Chicago and Milwaukee last year.
Dave Rempis – soprano/tenor/baritone saxophone
Terrie Ex - guitar
Jon Rune Strøm – bass
Tollef Østvang - drums
Jazz Wax hits a different buyer in my opinion, those exploring jazz artists for a first time with minimal financial risk. With the current state of online streaming those exploring music genres may best be served skipping the EU bootlegs such as Jazz Wax, Doxy, etc. My understanding is these are sourced from CD and released in LP format.
Live these musicians smoked both performances.
Four days straight with significant smog associated with the continuing Canadian wildfires have taken their toll on me, so this afternoon it is time to spend a couple of hours indoors. The bike ride has been postponed to this evening. Our local air quality index has ranged from a high of 167 to a low of 127 over the last four days. Unfortunately, a brief rain had little effect to improve the situation.
The air quailiy situation has presented an opportunity for an aternoon listen. I reached for this Third Stream gem, Jeanne Lee and Ran Blake The Newest Sound Around.
If my copy of it is here, next up will be Joe Daley:
The Joe Daley Trio At Newport ’63, Joe Daley with Russell Thorne and Hal Russell. Yes that Hal Russell, founder of Chicago’s NRG Ensemble.
The smoke has been dreadful. And there is visible ash. Bleh
Yes ash here as well. Furthermore, to add insult to injury atmospheric effects, particularly UV rays, are modifying the particulate that is not rinsed from the atmosphere, the result an increase in atmospheric benzene and formaldehyde. That campfire aroma associated with the Canadian wildfires has taken on a new characteristic, the acrid smell of burning rubber and plastic. I noted it first thing this morning driving into town, and thought some one had ignited a burning barrel full of plastics. Arrgh!
Here is an article explaining the phenomenon and its likely cause:
