Christian McBride Big Band – Without Further Ado, Vol. 1
Christian McBride returns with a soulful, swinging big-band celebration featuring an all-star guest lineup: Sting & Andy Summers reunite on “Murder By Numbers,” while powerhouse vocalists—Jeffrey Osborne, Samara Joy, José James, Cécile McLorin Salvant, Dianne Reeves, and Antoinette Henry—bring vibrant interpretations to classics like Old Folks, Back in Love Again, Moanin’, and more.
A 2012 Trost Recordings release Boneshaker, Mars Williams, Kent Kessler, and Paal Nielsen-Love. High energy set reminiscent of Mars’ work with Hal Russell’s NRG Ensemble.
Liberté is best classified as a genre-blending world-jazz album, infused with elements of French chanson, Latin and Basque pop, jazz-rock, and electronic nuances (ChatGPT, 2025). And I agree A fun album to listen to!
Timeless jazz at its finest. This Verve release captures two legends at ease—warm, playful, and ready to make magic. Their chemistry doesn’t just shine in the music, but right here in the photo: effortless charm, unmatched artistry, and a collaboration that defined an era.
Miles From India, a 3 LP box set comprised of musicians associated with Miles Davis supplemented by some of India’s finest musicians. The set kicks off with 19+ minute interpretation of Spanish Key from Bitches Brew featuring alto saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa. Wallace Roney on trumpet does a fine job on this version.
If you don’t have this let’s keep that a secret between us.
But buy the LP. And also the CD wether you have a CD player or not.
And if you don’t love this album, maybe it’s your diet.
These New York Trio Recordings can rightly be compared to the Keith Jarrett Trio recordings, but have their own special sauce–I really like those I have. And Gary Peacock! He always just commands my attention.
Futari - Underground, Futari being Satoko Fujii and Taiko Saito. Great performance with tracks 7 & 8 Finite & Infinite, and Asayake reminding me of the mid-70’s work of Julius Eastman. The closer is a fun tongue in cheek romp, Street Techno Punks. The excellent sonics are a bonus typical of Satoko’s label Libra Records. Satoko Fujii continues to impress.
A classic and a mainstay in my rotation. Lee Ritenour’s Rit’s House never fails—smooth, soulful, and timeless. Perfect for when you just want to sit back and let the music take over.
Larry Carlton – Deep Into It
One of those albums I never get tired of. Carlton’s tone, the grooves, the way every track just flows — it hits the sweet spot every time. Smooth, soulful, and always puts me in the right headspace. Another true favorite in my rotation.
Aerophonic records just announced this upcoming CD release, EarscratcherOtoliths. Earscratcher is Dave Rempis, Elisabeth Harnick, Fred Longberg-Holm, and Tim Daisy. While I have not yet heard this CD, the October 2024 performance in Madison was outstanding as was the earlier Earscratcher CD.
