Some funky Japanese fusion jazz from Masuru Imada Trio +2, Green Caterpillar released in 1975 on the Japanese Three Blind Mice Label.
Bass clarinetist Jason Stein’s trio Locksmith Isidore featuring Jason Roebke and drummer Mike Pride on the 2018 Northern Spy release After Caroline. This free flowing set is some of the best I have heard from these three individuals. Now if they were to add vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz.
Newly arrived cd from the Earscratcher quartet..another excellent set on Aerophonic,
Dave Rempis – soprano/alto/tenor saxophone
Elisabeth Harnik – piano
Fred Lonberg-Holm - cello/electronics
Tim Daisy - drums
It is indeed another fine release from Dave Rempis. I like what Elisabeth, Fred, and Tim bring to this session, from Madison’s North Street Cabaret.Sponsorship from our friends at BlueStem Jazz.
ust revisited People Behave Like Ballads by Rebecca Martin, and wow… what a timeless listen. Her voice carries such intimacy and calm that it feels like she’s singing directly to you. Perfect for quiet mornings, long drives, or winding down at the end of the day. If you love thoughtful lyrics wrapped in jazz and folk tones, this one’s a gem.
Just went back to Katie Melua’s debut album Call Off The Search. Hard to believe how fresh it still sounds. Her voice is warm, soothing, and effortless — blending jazz, blues, and folk into something truly timeless. A perfect album for rainy afternoons, late-night reflections, or just when you need music that feels like a conversation with an old friend.
Spinning Ike Quebec’s Blue and Sentimental — one of those records that just stops time. His tenor saxophone tone is so rich and soulful, every note feels like it’s pouring straight from the heart. Backed by Grant Green on guitar, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums, the whole album is pure late-night magic. Smooth, deep, and endlessly replayable.
A ‘you are there’ audience recording from September 2, 1992 at NYC’s Village Vanguard (early and late shows).
After Midnight blends classic jazz textures with intimate vocals and rich orchestral arrangements. A collaboration that feels both cinematic and deeply personal—perfect for listening anytime
Cornelia Nilson “Where do You Go”
Cornelia Wilson “Where do You Go”
Really enjoying this cd from the lovely Swedish drummer.
Solo Bugge Wesseltoft, Playing recorded in his home studio, and playing with a sry sense of humor, exemplified on the third track Singing, and surprise at the end of Take FIve.. Bugge’s recordings tend to be nothing less than excellent.
I’ve listened to this 3 times this week…a fantastic record.
It was recorded at a place called North St. Cabaret, a small club. The recording engineer knows his onions, the sound is exemplary.
Spinning Getz/Gilberto on Blu-ray Pure Audio. One of those albums that never gets old—João’s delicate guitar, Astrud’s conversational vocals, and Getz’s sax gliding like silk. “Corcovado” stopped me in my tracks again. Pure timelessness.
If you love this album you should hear this version:
Flippin’ unreally good sounding Plangent Process version.
North St Cabaret is a special place in Madison that has made accommodations for jazz performances. It has a bit of the old school feel to it. Generally the musicians enjoy it greatly. Other venues in Madison that support jazz are AACM member Hanah Jon Taylor’s Cafe Coda and Buzz Kemper’s rather intimate recording studio Audio for the Arts. BlueStem Jazz, a Madison based non-profit, has partnered with these special places underwriting performances, thus taking the risk out of the equation for the club owners. This allows for less commercial and more challenging music to be presented to a Madison audience. Some acts underwritten include:
jaimie breezy branch, Isaiah Collier, Roscoe Mitchell, William Parker, Wadada Leo Smith, Jeff Parker, Ken Vandermark, Dave Rempis, Nate McBride, Mars Williams, Paal Nilssen-Love Orchestra, Julian Lage, Sun of Goldfinger (Tim Berne, David Torn, Ches Smith), Broken Shadows (Time Berne, Chris Speed, Dave King, Reid Anderson), Russ Johnson, Eddie Gomez Trio, Craig Taborn, Greg Ward Trio, Keefe Jackson, Jason Stein, Harriet Tubman, Kahil El’Zabar, Frode Gjerstad, Mats Gustafsson, Chico Freeman, and and a young up and coming saxophonist - Zoh Amba.
Rumor has it Matthew Ship Trio is playing in October 4 and the Bad Plus October 22.
Regarding field recording engineer Dave Zuchowski, his talents are well regarded by musicians and listeners alike.
