Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 3)

Good group. But they’re missing what every organ trio has missing, a bass player. That said, drummer Sluppick finds the pocket and stays there.

A great album. Too much to list hence the back cover.

He was such a great artist. I especially like the rich tone he mastered.

Thank-you for the heads up!

BTW, my wife and I will be heading into Chicago for the Hyde Park Jazz Festival next Saturday, September 27. Looking forward to the Hamid Drake 70th birthday concert and celebration.

Speaking of Hamid Drake, this Thrill Jockey double LP features various combos centered around Fred Anderson and Hamid Drake. Harrison Bankhead or Joshua Abrams on bass, Jeff Parker on guitar, and Harrison steps up to piano on For Brother Thompson.

What a box! Contains some of most adventurous, engaging music that Miles ever released.

Listening to “He Loved Him Madly’ from the ‘Get Up With It’ material. Incredible.

I love this music. I wish the box were mastered a bit differently.

I got this a few days ago. Need to spin it soon. My listening time has diminished lately.

Do not forget Trio 3 and Jason Moran!

Trio 3 is for certain.

La Grande Cru, The Attic & Eve Risser. Portuguese tenor saxophonist’s trio The Attic is joined by pianist Eve Risser. Risser is new to me and their pianistic style is somewhat of a cross between Sylvie Courvoisier and Cecil Taylor. This is a fine quartet.

Now Listening
Erin Boheme – What a Life

Velvety vocals, polished yet personal jazz-pop feel. Smooth, soulful, and heartfelt—perfect for both focused listening and easy evenings.

A rare one from 1963, this 2015 reissue sold out quickly and was again made available in 2016, a treasure. Jazz/The African Sound a South African ensemble billed as afro-Ellington, which may be pushing it a bit. Chris McGregor led this 17 piece ensemble, The Castle Lager Big Band. The style leans more on Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus than any notion of free jazz or The New Thing emerging in the states. The vinyl sounds great, clean, clear, and crisp.

Pure energy from one of jazz’s greatest bassists in the most legendary room. Tight, soulful, and alive with history—this is live jazz at its best.
