Strictly Jazz Sounds (Part 3)

Gershwin was my Dad’s favorite, I grew up listening to him and will never stop.

Absolutely, no reason to stop!

Have you heard Joni Mitchell’s version of Summertime?

No

It is worth your minimal time finding it on YouTube.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll probably get to it one of these days. I’m not a big youtube visitor.

I pay a little attention to YouTube as well. I know of her performance only because I saw the broadcast of the Kennedy Center honors.

Stan Getz “In Scandinavia 1959-1960” Jazztwin cd

I will never get enough of Getz in this area of the world in this time frame, documented on Verve, Dragon or any other recordings.

Gary Crosby’s Nu Troop “Migrations” Dune cd

I’d forgotten about this cd. Really fine playing a la Jazz Messengers in decent sound.

It’s been too long since I spun this fantastic disc.

It is one of my all-time favorites. A great disc to play on the final day of the year.

Betty Carter “I’m Yours, You’re Mine” Verve cd. Unfortunately her last album. She was something else. A brave and brilliant artist.

The entire album warrants a revisit, compelling music IMO.

A 2010 Firehouse recording, Myra Melford’s Be Bread The Whole Tree Gone. The Be Bread ensemble includes trumpeter Cuong Vu, clarinetist and alto clarinetist Ben Goldberg, percussionist Matt Wilson, guitarist Brandon Ross, electric bassist Stomu Takeishi, and pianist Myra Melford.

Having recently heard clarinetist Ben Goldberg perform with Myra Melford and Geof Bradfield I thought I’d stoke a few memories with this set. Goldberg also has an excellent recording with Geof Bradfield and Dana Hall on the Delmark label.

Tim Berne shines on the Shell Game, but I’d like to have heard more piano and less electronics from Craig Taborn. Solid drumming from drummer Tom Rainey and this David Torn production released on Thirsty Ear. Great name for a music label, Thirsty Ear, up their with the creative music performance venue Hungry Brain.

I truly miss Roy’s annual Joe Segal’s Jazz Showcase Christmas Season performances. Always a treat. Those and Von Freeman’s holiday sets at The Green Mill.
