Sunlight: Sound Impressions

Sorry, if I ask a (as I think) already zillion times asked question: Which DSD formats I can use now via I2S since “Sunlight”?

By the way: It sound better every day, and my TT has a much harder opponent now. Besides I use a new AQ HDMI Vodka 48 between my DMP and the DS since 3 days and it fits perfectly…!

All the way up to quad rate DSD.

DSD64, DSD128 and DSD256. Either native DSD or DoP.

Thanks a lot Ted! I see an expensive future coming down the road…

I have been getting phenomenal sonic results with Sunlight using HQPlayer to upsample all PCM and DSD to DSD256.

My SD card arrived today! I always buy the SD card and forego the whole card buying, card formatting, downloading, uploading, etc. rigmarole. (I am just lazy like that. )

Personally, I have grown to like this approach because it gives me time to review the early adopters’ experiences, identify some things to look for and know that the code has otherwise proven to be more or less bug free before doing the update.

Looking forward to getting some first impressions this evening…

Cheers.

I installed a pre-amp in my system about 18 months ago and felt it was an improvement, much to my irritation. After doing the Edcor transformer upgrade back in March I experimented with going direct again and it was surprised to find that the things I used to dislike about the direct sound weren’t really a problem any more. And with Sunlight in the mix now… just stunning clarity, sweetness, fullness, impact, depth etc.

I will at some point plug the pre-amp back in to see what that does. But I’m not in a hurry. Should mention that I’m also using Roon’s 2x/4x upsampling rather than playing bit-perfect into the DAC. YMMV.

Too bad there isn’t a CERTIFIED hearing test frequency sensitivity graph accompanying each forum commenter’s subjective assessment of Sunlight. Might help explain SOME of the variations reported. But then again what normal human being would want to expose any hearing handicaps for the world to see. This last statement especially applies to mainstream audio equipment reviewers. But please don’t get me wrong. I don’t hear like I used to, yet I still get great enjoyment daily from listening to music and can say that Sunlight has taken my headphone system listening pleasure up a notch. So obviously a bit more to music enjoyment than simply frequency sensitivity.

Listened for about an hour last night (DSD DAC with digital files sourced from my iMac via JRMC using the Bridge II Ethernet card)…

Install/upload of the firmware via the SD card I ordered from PS Audio apparently went off without a hitch.

Initial, early impression is one of being able to discern more layers of sounds, voices, instruments separated within the recordings.

More listening (via Roon, JRMC and my PSA DMP w/I2S input) and my subjective observations to come…

my friend, ken, can write you a book on the various applications of shun mook since he has dabbled in almost all variations of shun mook, from the mpingpo disc to the “mooncake” (resonator). here, i am going to share with you on how shun mook acts as a “concentrator” for the all-important vocalist’s mouth, a criteria which is important to asian audiophiles. a good vocalist’s mouth has presence, is pinpoint, sharp and no larger than a 50 sen coin. the perfect vocalist’s mouth can even show the “movement” of the mouth. yes, this is no BS, no snake oil, no voodoo.

Is the vocals like that for you?

I´m still amazed that by this version and its abilities and that a bit software can make such a difference. This is really good. All initial impressions have survived, the clarity, increased dynamic contrast and the definition in the bass.

I my book this very, very close to reference quality sound in my headphone setup - PS Jr DAC- Ear 909-Audeze

Thanks

I just want say that in the space of about six months my really good digital front end consisting of the PS Audio DMP and DS DAC ( Windom ) has gone to an excellent digital front end that now consist of the PST and DS DAC ( Sunlight ). I use a short ( one foot ) HDMI cable to connect the two. If you play SACD’s, this is the system you want.

so. sunlight v windom. more clarity. soundstage is different. but not sure how to describe. need more time with that. do feel a little “brightness” in very top end. i would describe windom as being warmer sounding overall. bass seems to sound a bit more “musical”…more natural color with bass violin and low end cello. ? does this upgrade require any time to settle in? or is it get what you get from the start?

I went back to Windom and feel so relieved… I mean relieved… less tension listening.

I will flip it back to Sunlight next week. The wisdom of this forum note that it is my system. I am surprised that all the other updates were a welcomed improvement… no need or feelings to change anything else. This one is different for some reason… time will tell… for me.

I do like the added detail (or is it revealed detail?). So next swap, I am going to try some cable swaps from my library. I want this to work for me.

Peace

cjbreeze, that’s pretty much my take as well. Sunlight is clearer with a brighter top end. Windom is warmer sounding and more musical or melodious. After running Sunlight for 4 days straight nonstop to get “burn-in” time, either it has calmed down a bit in the upper ranges or my ears are getting more used to it. The jury is still out for me but I know love the warm sound quality of Windom so I might end up going back to it.

I was able to attenuate greatly the brighter top end by replacing my Audience AU24 XLR cables with Kubala-Sosna Expression XLR cables.
Other people seem to have good results with Iconoclast XLR cables.
You may also try different speaker cables.
Finally, some people have said the brighter top end somehow vanished or reduced greatly by nonstop “burn-in” time.
Hopefully, you find a good recipe to make Sunlight sound better for you and then share the results
