Sunlight: Sound Impressions

Just dropped in to Madison and loaded Sunlight. I am letting it settle in. Too soon to say. Will let it play through the night. No issues with the FW load. Components need to warm up and settle in as it was all mothballed (unplugged) since March.

You’re in for a treat.

Yeah, the first two hours show promise. Due to my schedule the burn in is going to be rather protracted. Summers I usually spend with a different audio system(s) that does not include a DSD DAC.

Well, something to look forward to when you do have the opportunity. :cocktail:

On the balloon theme, a balloon over my property a week ago at dusk as they search for a place to land.

Hopefully all went well. Weather permitting there is typically 4-12 on any given weekend morning. Typically from the local municipal airport, then they do touch and go on the string of lakes in our area. One mistake and there’s a flooded basket. Typically they do fly overs between 6:30 and 7:30 AM. Should there be an incident there are enough people awake with boats to assist. My wife is usually out in her scull between 6:00 and 7:30 AM so she can sound an alert if need be. We had one just miss the power lines near the airport last Saturday AM. Still ground winds and questionable judgement, but all was well.

The balloons in my area take off next to the river.

As a pilot I often find them a bit annoying; they get in the way.

Loaded Sunrise without a hitch. Played familiar music and my first impressions are more inner detail, quieter background, more delicate highs.
Well done Ted and Paul !

Sunlight is a nice improvement over Windom. The highs are clearer and piano sounds really good.

Surprisingly, well recorded live music seems to benefit the most. The instruments are really dynamic and well separated just like they would be in a live concert (although no stereo system will rival live music).

Specifically, I am listening to the Dance by Fleetwood Mac and two Eagles recordings: Hell Freezes Over and the Farewell Tour I.

Well done PS Audio and Ted Smith. Although I would like to see the auto input fixed in the Jr.

These guys sure love to hear themselves talk. Endlessly. So many words, so little content.

Fortunately, one can click around and obtain the entire content in a minute or two.

I have difficulty imagining watching the whole thing.

Video editing is not their strong suit.

That said, I actually enjoy their enthusiasm.

They are a nice bunch. I just cannot see watching the video and wasting 30 minutes of my time - time which I will never get back.

Nail hit, sparks fly.

It’s a good thing it’s possible to skip around, otherwise I wouldn’t watch a single one of their vids.

Yes, they come across as very nice, but they are clumsy speakers. And speaking of negative feedback, Vilip (sp?) should try his “humor” in front of a live audience.

And speaking of “sound impressions”, my gf commented tonight that the system is sounding noticeably better than ever, which I’m attributing to burn-in of Sunlight. Who knows?

They are genuinely nice guys. Some of my gear and my Wilson’s come from Adrian’s shop. They go out of their way to please their customers. Vilip is dry and funny. This video did get off the rails and could have been summed up in a few.

Now onto Sunlight Impressions, I’ve reloaded it a few times and I’ve hit a sweet spot at 5 loads and a week of playing. It’s also forced me to adjust my speakers. They funny thing is that the exact location is where the speakers were prior to some other changes to my equipment.

I’ve had Sunlight on board a DSJ for a couple of weeks now and had run it for over 50 hours before listening. I am not surprised to have similar sound quality observations that most have reported. What is new for me is that I haven’t felt any need to raise the volume above 84, this now produces ample realism for most recordings without having to either chase detail or more envelopment by turning up the volume. Thanks for that advice Ted. When making sound evaluations in my subjective way, I try tracks that on past DACs create unpleasant artefacts. These became quite minor on the DSJ, and with each firmware update became increasingly insignificant. Sunlight has further tidied things up so impressively, in one formerly difficult note, I now hear the original studio processed sung word, the artificial reverb, the reverb tail completely along with the original sustained voice. No last little bit of smearing remains and all is resolved coherently. Great recordings also benefit as expected. Any competently recorded material, not the hifi stuff, now gives many additional soundstage cues, a significantly true to life tonality for voice, piano, violins, everything. All of it is quite natural sounding.

My overriding impression is that I now imagine that I hear the voice of the DSJ output stages itself as the character now. It is no longer a question of can I hear more into a recording when I listen? It is not a veil nor a colouring, but to use a light analogy, I hear the colour temperature of the DAC. I am not concerned about this for it is neither warm nor cool, it just has its own particular temperature. I do not take Sunlight’s name this literally, but it’s well chosen as the culmination of a truly amazing series of developments over the last few years that I have enjoyed this DAC. During this time I have kept to the same push pull valve amps and full range electrostats (Quad) without requiring a preamp. I sincerely appreciate the team at PSAudio for making this update possible and Ted Smith for directing his considerable talents into what gives many so much enjoyment.
