You’ve probably seen my ramblings about the LHY SW6, LHY SW10 Pro and Network Acoustics Tempus in the other threads. Tonight’s insanity… adding the DLink DMS-105 unmanaged 2.5GB switch to the mix…
The D-Link immediately hooked up at 2.5Gbps to my Ubiquiti Pro Max switch. I tried it with the stock wall wart immediately after listening to the Tempus.
Umm…. This is actually… quite good… tons of detail, a bit forward but lots of energy and texture. Not as relaxed as the LHY switches or Tempus, but no haze whatsoever.
I switched the D-Link back and forth between the wall wart and Tempus PSU using a plug adapter (the D-Link uses one of those skinnier plugs). The Tempus PSU makes a difference - takes a bit of edge off, loud passages are less harsh and better sorted, instruments are a little silkier. No it does not make it sound like the Tempus, but it’s pretty damn good. Might be interesting trying something like an iFi iPowerX.
I then switched to the SW10 Pro. Definitely more relaxed than the D-Link (and the Tempus for that matter), a bit more emphasis on the core of the note vs the leading edge, rounder but also a little less present. Bass has a nice resonance to it but also just a tad boomy at times - that can be tamed with a different power cord though.
The SW6 has been powered down for quite a while so probably unfair to swap it in cold - will give it a shot tomorrow.
This is good work and I appreciate what you are doing a great deal!
When you put a Network Acoustics Origin or Farad Super6/10 on a switch (or actually any digital device) you will see what it’s capable of.
There is a lot of room for improvement.
Isn’t the Tempus PSU basically an Origin?
EDIT: ah maybe not, saw your reply in the other thread
I have studied the Origin story of the Origin. It seems like the ideal thing for not me. Maybe two or more of them for not me.
lot of that going around
As per my comment in the other thread, I gave the SW10 Pro a few days to settle back into the system. Gave it a listen tonight and while it still sounds very good, I was missing a certain magic that my system had before.
Swapped the Tempus back in, and the magic was back. As good as the LHY switches are, there’s something that the Tempus brings to streaming in my system that makes everything that much more tactile and alive… it is pretty unique and hard to live without once you hear it.
Happy cake day taww!
Awesome to hear this and thank you for doing a comparison! My Tempus is finally in Cali and should arrive at my door tomorrow. I didn’t even have a Pro but an OG SW-10. So the difference should be even greater for me!
Great to see you join the Tempus club
I ordered a Tempus based on @taww’s review and received it yesterday, it replaced a LHY SW6. I used the same power cord, SFP connection and Muon Pro system I had been using with the SW6, just replaced the switch. Heard a nice difference immediately, big step up and it’s sounding even better today.
Unfortunately it seems switches really do matter.
Congrats! Always a little nervous when someone takes my recommendation at face value, so I’m glad it worked out it’ll improve a good amount over the first couple weeks. Give it a try with the built in ports instead of SFP as well.
Thanks. Looking forward to it improving as it breaks in - I’ll say this, this is the most pleasant break in period I can remember.
My RJ45 wall jack to the Tempus is about 15’. I have an LHY FMC at the wall jack and fiber to the switch. Not sure I want to spend another 4 digits on an Ethernet cable, especially knowing there’s a Muon Pro 2.0 and cable just around the corner. I’ll try it with a 5m Audioquest Cinnamon RJ/E cable I’ve got to see the difference, but it may not be the best test comparing copper vs fiber.
I tried to buy a Tempus yesterday and my dealer told me not to. This seems nice.
He used one for a time but stayed with the SW6. That’s what I use.
Interesting, what was his rationale? Not worth the money?
(BACCH adio is certainly a different variable for you)
He might not hear switches either. My struggle. Sigh.
Your thoughts on the Tempus convinced me to order one. But then…
It would be interesting if you could get one for a comparison of your own. My source for purchasing (whom you introduced me to) really likes his Tempus. Maybe your dealer had one with the older power supply, but even then I would’ve expected it to be better than a SW6.
Well it’s definitely better than the SW6 and hearing for your own is always the best. And you could send it back anyway.
