Update on Bridge II

I did some more checking, and if I understand correctly you are dependent on a computer that host the Roon Server.

In other words, pretty much a deal breaker to me. I imagined an embedded version… shaking-head-no-smiley-emoticon_gif

Also, no UPnP/DLNA. No bridge! Not sure how much work they want to put into it either. I like the idea but love using my bridge.

Edit: Can’t wait for Bridge II!!! Been following the ups and downs of getting gapless to work via a network connection on this board for years.

Gapless has been working nicely since early on with B2.

Paul McGowan said I can tell you one thing we are committed to - and hopefully this will happen if the software gods are kind - Roon. Roon is the new Sooloos music management system and we are using it here at the Munich show and I am here to tell you it's freaking awesome!!! This is the answer boys.

We’ve been waiting for the perfect interface to our music collections? Well Roon is it! Wow. More later, I am in the middle of it all but jhaving a killer time using it.

Does this mean we need to pay for roon as well as the bridge?

That's what I understand and am very glad that's the case. However, until I can buy one, it's still vapor to me.

Paul what have you been able to discover about the work involved to make Roon and Bridge 2 play together?

I know that Roon is not planning to support DLNA so that appears to mean some interface development on the Bridge 2. Is this a major effort or do you expect it to be fairly quick ( if there is such a thing in software development

PS - anyone got Tidal to work with Chrome + MacBook Pro or OS X Yosemite + DStream DAC ??

I have a mac mini going into my DStream (USB) that i run Tidal/Chrome on using a macbook air / sharing the screen in Yosemite and works well-albeit now i’m going to look into this Roon business…

I am curious about this also. I've read as much as I can about Roon. Without UPnP/DLNA support, I can't understand why one would use the Bridge at all to play from Roon; just connect your computer via USB. As far as I can tell, Roon is a non-starter for folks like me who prefer not to run a full-sized computer (as opposed to a NAS + tablet controller) to play music. But I would be happy to be proven wrong.

In case anyone has not seen it, CA has a review,

It is embedded and (I think) requires no computer. We’d embed it right into the Bridge - at least that’s my understanding. I’ll check again with the Roon guys today.

Also, Roon may not require a constant outside connection unless you are streaming from Tidal. But I could be wrong with all this, so I will check. Good questions.

If all goes as planned Roon will come built into Bridge II at no cost. Having said that, to use Roon you need to buy their subscription ($10 a month or $500 lifetime) if you want to turn it on.

I am running Roon on the Mac Mini at the show. Though they do not have a Mac based controlling side yet - close - and I am using an HP tablet to run the user interface. It sounds really good.

Paul, this evening i downloaded Roon and have been messing around with it. I’m able to control it remotely using my Macbook Air. Just that bit of functionality makes the software worth it to me (not having to screenshare with my mac mini, which i think frees up that computer to just stream data into the directstream). It runs Tidal better than the Tidal app or Chrome interface, and it’s organized my classical music and .wav files that audirvana can never get organized. This thing doesn’t support DSD/DSF yet but i’m already sold. As you said, it’s the “real deal.” I’ve never seen music organized in such an intuitive way. I’m very much looking forward to this being supported in the bridge II.

Also from what i understand there’s an iOS / Android app in the works-presumably so we can control it with tablets and phones.

I just found out that Frode is correct, you will still need a computer to run Roon. The Bridge will discover it and connect with it and you can play through the Bridge, but a computer is required. Bummer.

Yes, I understood this from the latest CA discussion.

If the CuBox can host the Roon Server it wouldn’t be too much of a hazzle:

Paul does that mean it is a given that Roon will be able to discover Bridge 2 and play files even though they do no support DLNA?

do you plan to have this before B2 ships? If so looks like us Beta testers will need to acquire Roon ( would be happy to do it if it works with Bridge 2)

this is exciting

I just watched the Computer Audiophile video of Roon and it is indeed very impressive. It’s not cheap but you do get a lot more than with the usual music server software. I do not want to go back to a computer/USB connection to my DS, however, so I am looking forward to B2 incorporating whatever it needs to incorporate and am also willing to beta test those features. I hope PSA (I suppose that means Dennis, who already has a lot in his plate) can figure it out and it’s not too painful.

So the only wired connection the computer will need is the LAN ?

I don’t know if it will happen in time for shipping so it’ll probably be an update. Yes, it will just communicate with what’s on your computer - which can be anywhere on the network - it’s not too bad and works great,

Yes, the only wired connection, the LAN. The computer could be something as small and insignificant as a NUC, or the office computer just hanging out anywhere in the home. No need for a computer in the listening room, just somewhere the Roon database can live and work. It’s not perfect but wow… the UI and actual operation, not to mention the sound quality, is just stunning.
