Using pre-amp with dac with volume control

I have a dac/streamer with volume control.I use now pre-amp.but dac have no fixed outputs.
So must i turn volume controle all to 0 orlike some suggest-10 db for best preformance…

Knowing you are using dCS Bartok i would recommand to set the Bartok at 0.0dBfs (removes control from the output leaving control of volume to the preamp) and set the line output of your Bartok to 2 or 6V rms (depending on the best match with preamp / desired volume).

best sonically is a standalone analog preamp volume control.
