Newbie question here. I am planning to get PS audio separates (DAC, pre amp, amp and streamer). I am only going to stream music for now. I would like to only use the volume control using the preamp as I read it gives full music resolution but is it possible if I only use the app as its more convinient compared to unit remote? Please enlighten me as I never had hifi equipments before. Thank you all in advance.
Welcome, and congrats on starting at the top!
Leave your streaming app at a hundred percent and use the preamps remote to control the volume.
Or maybe 97% to allow for hot sources.
Agree, set a baseline for the sources but then use the preamps volume control for individual tracks.
I wouldn’t have it any other way. With a sweet preamp, it always sounds better than whatever they put inside some other device.
The Preamp in the MU2 is not suffering though.
Hello Newbie
I would predict that you’ll hear little if any difference. And once you own this equipment, you’ll have the tools needed to go back and forth searching for your favorite solution. I would choose convenience, but that’s me. Have fun.
Both Qobuz amd Innuos help suggested I stream at 100% and use the DAC for vol control when I asked about streaming through my Innuos Zen Mk3. Mow, w9th my new PMG 512, I simply stream Qobuz Connect through the onboard streamer and use the DAC for vol control (usually at 12 out of 10).
Note: Maestro vol changes with my DAC adjustments but sometimes sticks. Sure this will be sorted soon.
PSAudio went back and forth between 100 and 97 during Axpona 2026
My PMG512 set at 97, and two days ago was 95. I wanted to hear an improvement, but I just couldn’t ![]()
The only time you MIGHT hear a difference is if you play a file that goes over 0dB. I’d say less than a 5% chance any file does that. Even then… It’s no big deal.
I know I have poorly mastered albums where every track goes over 0dB.
