Variable Multiwave Update For P5/P10 - Interesting Results

DarqueKnight said: I trust my ears and memory up to a point, but usually, there is just too much going on in a stereo sound stage to try to remember it all from one listening session to the next.

This would often be the case.

I do not found soundstage all that interesting, but this is an exceptionally effective way of reaching the goal of the best possible soundstage.

I would expect as a side benefit one is also obtaining excellent transparency/clarity. Perhaps when being this careful it also maximizes frequency response coherence. (The most stable and precise images probably result from the most even, consistent frequency response.)

If you installed the original release 37, then you won’t be able to install anything new until you go back and install an earlier version. Don’t use 37 because there is a problem in the memory and bootloader. Just go straight to 38. I don’t suspect there will be a 39.

So for me (running 37) I would have to downgrade the firmware first and then upgrade to 38?

Really?

I was able to install 38 after using 37 without issue.

Paul,

To my knowledge there have been three firmware releases of Variable MultiWave:

Version 36 released 12/18/13, zip file 11-056-01-X-FMC-25.zip
Version 37 released 12/23/13, zip file 11-056-01-X-FMC-27.zip
Version 38 released 12/31/13, zip file 11-056-01-X-FMC-28.zip

I wondered why the zip file numbers skip "number 26" when going from version 36 (zip file 25) to version 37 (zip file 27). Was the original release 37 contained in the "number 26" zip file?

Version 27 (zip file number 18) contained a PDF file with release notes for all firmware up to version 27. Is an update of the firmware release notes available covering releases 28 through 38?

I am sorry, I meant 36. Only a few people loaded 36 before we pulled it. If you did load it, this is the one causing the memory problem./

Ok, so 37->38 is fine, great

I am one if these. I had no problem loading 37 after 36.

36 does have many problems and is best avoided.

Thanks Paul

I would like to add the firmware upgrade to the Power Plant has given me a musical upgrade as significant as the MK11 DAC board. I’m so enjoying the sound from my system :x

Thank you so much Paul and Dennis and the PS Audio team

A very happy customer

Thanks Paul

John, you did not mention whether you tried various MultiWave settings. Did you compare the sound with and without MultiWave and with different MultiWave settings?

@johno@datacom.co.nz Thanks! Glad we could help! Tell the world for us.

@darqueknight

Yes I tried the other multi wave settings and prefer setting 6. There is a significant increase in resolution across the audio spectrum, and I feel the increased resolution is well balanced.

The audio improvement derived from the new power plant firmware has triggered me to seriously consider the power base, in another thread I’m seeking comment of the power base use in combination with the power plant

John

Hi … been unable to post in this thread before due to a login issue, which has just been resolved.

I’ve installed the two versions, 37 and 38. I found with 37 multiwave, MW=4 gave me additional bass weight and a slight improvement in timing.

Due to the bug in 37 I installed version 38, without any issues.

BIG improvement in sound, now using multiwave with MW = 6. Timing improved to such an extent, it makes everything seem so much more real, helps the speakers to disappear.

Very impressed with this version of the firmware.

Couple of other points, I have a UK model and again the SD card is inserted with the label up, as others have noted.

Both the firmware upgrades I’ve installed, all the zones came up switched off and I manually had to switch them on again.

One issue I have had with these firmware updates is that there doesn’t seem to be anywhere on the site where the firmware upgrades are stored.

Dark Knight listed these, 4 zipped files, earlier in the thread but when I went to try to copy these they only appeared as a png, (picture) file so unable to use them.

I got the latest version eventually from the Multiwave page.

Place the cursor over the attachment, right click, then select "Save target as" to download the file. If you select "Save picture as", it will download the attachment thumbnail image (.png file) rather than the attachment.

For some reason, the forum software changes the names of attachments. For example, the file named "11-056-01-X-FMC-13.zip" will download as "ecc6e0e06b296960855454741c57b3.zip" and you will have to rename it back to the original name.

You can email PSA's customer service manager, Alex Paananen for prior firmware updates: alexp at psaudio dot com.

That is odd. My US version P10 comes up in whatever state it was in prior to the update.

Further comment on the audio improvements in using Multwave with MW set to 6.

I found a big improvement in timing, which was already very very good.

Even upon switch on of my system timing is now excellent, with the improvement that the musical image seems more ‘solid’, more real. As the system warms up this improves further and with the low background noise, i.e. silent deep background, provided by the P10 supplying exactly 240 volts of clean power I now find the speakers starting to disappear.

Bass is also deeper and has more articulation and depth.

A fantastic firmware update from PS Audio.

happy new year to all music lovers,ps audio equipment owners an firmware upgraders.greetings from berlin/germany/good old europe

first of all…sorry for my bad english…i am not a native speaker.i learned it long time ago at school…and from the lyrics of merle haggard songs in the past.

since one year i run an p5 due to the “old schooled electrical system” in my appartment…my accuphase amplifier sometime lacked before…he wants and needs an exact sine to work proper and stable.

i never upgraded the firmware before the new variable multiwave features were launched with the 038-version,because i feared to brick the 3700-euro-p5 if something would go wrong and no support right to the hand.

anyway…last week i had the courage…and did it…

i run the european/german version of the p5 and can confirm sherrids post, that after installing the latest firmware available and the reboot of my system the p5 fell in the factory settings and i had to engange the power zones manually…first i feared i had bricked the p5…after a second of pouring gallons of sweat i figuerd it out and engaged the four zones by hand again…i left the generally settings at “always on” and everything runs sufficiant to my ears.

it seems to be that versions sold outside the US are a little bit different from domestic models.

Welcome, muellkramer!

I am happy to hear you made the upgrade change and are up and running.

I would never have guessed Merle Haggard would be so helpful.

Muellkramer,

Let me tell you a little secret. Many english speaking people in this country are losing their ability to spell, use proper grammar, and describe their thoughts in a concise manner. You are further ahead in the curve than you might imagine.

On another note, I am quite pleased to read these comments regarding the continual search for the best sound, using such devices as the power products talked about here. It is the ‘what if’ gene that has allowed previously unknown benefits sprinkled over our music. I sometimes sift through the ideas to help improve my own system.

And we would be delighted to have you here even if your English was not excellent (which it is).

+1. There's always room for more fellow audio enthusiasts here on the forum.

Along with 4krow and Elk welcome aboard.

4krow is correct; young adults in the USA today have completely lost any sense of proper use of the English language. Sad to say in this day and age.

Furthering, he's also joined by many others here on the forum in welcoming additional thoughts and insights on equipment and sound.

Looking forward to reading many more posts from you, Muellkramer.
