


Most likely construction of violin and possibly bow. Period bowing techniques were different but, not being a violinist, I have no idea if that would make a difference (I suspect not). I don’t believe the lower pitch of Baroque tuning should make any difference to the timbre of notes.
Thanks. I was never sure what was the cause but I always thought the period violins had a bit of a sharper attack than modern ones.

My Dad always avoided early-period instrument recordings, he always thought they sounded out of tune. When I really put my ear to it, he has a point but its not so much that it bothers me in any way.
Not that he would have gone, but he would have hated the time I saw M. Ward play and he couldn’t be bothered to tune his guitar. I walked out. That is what out of tune really means
