What are you spinning now? (Mark 5)

Continuing down memory lane. Sammy Piazza’s family lived in our neighbourhood and his younger sister would occasionally hang out with us down at the stream partying and listening to music.

This afternoon I am mostly listening to the Longplayer
I have a preset for it on my streaming “internet radio” (actually a 1970 Roberts tabletop radio fed by a Raspberry pi).
Useful when gentle soothing sounds are required, with no need to choose anything for the next 980 years).

Cool. I like the concept. Will give it a listen.

Sitting in the dark, getting my blood pressure down, thinking about the Hubble Deep Field and wondering how my life would be different if I had followed my dream and become an Astronomer. Probably wouldn’t have as good a system!

Before I read your last line I was thinking you’d be poor but oh so rich. I understand there is very little professional observational astronomy done any more.

Luckily I still have some connections in that world and get to stay up to date to the degree I can. You’re right though, riches untold. Edit to insert Photo of Me in my heavier days and the Great Peter Schultz who runs the Planetary Sciences Center at Brown University where the photo is taken. I never miss an opportunity to visit when I am in Providence.

Yesterday and today I revisited the first three recordings of Barbara Lea (and the first has four additional songs recorded with Billy Taylor at the piano later in her career).

My favorite is “Barbara Lea” on Prestige with Johnny Windhurst. Johnny Windhurst also appears with her on the followup Prestige, “Lea in Love” though there are expanded groups that I don’t quite enjoy as much, though several tunes are elevated by the wonderful underrated baritone playing of Ernie Caceres. I have both of these in DSD remastered cds from Japan that sound excellent.

“Barbara Lee”

“Lea in Love”

The first, “A Woman in Love” on Riverside is reissued on cd with nice sound on the Audiophile Records cd mastered by Jack Tower. Billy Taylor appeared on her original debut session appears here mixed with four tunes with only Billy on the piano recorded in '78. On the original tracks Johnny Windhurst appears as well. And his playing is very fitting.

Lea was a good singer, in the Lee Wiley school but transcending it in ways I really enjoy.
