What are you spinning right now?

Keeping the funky going! Dr Lonnie Smith closes out the Chicago Jazz Fest tonight. Not going…cold, traffic, parking, I’m lazy, my stereo!! Should be great there tonight though. The crowd will be enthusiastic. Pritzker Pavillion is truely a special place…and Lonnie Smith can lay the groove down.

Helene Grimaud, Bach

Until I read a review of this album – I rarely read reviews – I never knew there was such controversy in regards to reinventing pieces with different instruments. It does not make a lot of sense to me; either you like how it sounds or not.

The first piece, which I assume has speed intended for a violin, is very pleasing to my ears when played through a piano. I am not a musician, nor a formal “student” of the subject, so I probably do not appreciate intricacies that others do. However, since music can be reinterpreted without damaging the original, where is the controversy.

I am surprised there is a stated controversy; composers have liberally copied themselves, transcribing their own works, as well as copying and transcribing works of others for literally centuries. There is also a long-standing tradition of playing a work originally composed for one instrument on another, especially when it is more difficult on the second instrument. There are also many transcription/ arrangements which are reinterpretations of the original composer’s work.

Can you post link to the review?

I would expect some controversy with respect to Hélène Grimaud’s performance of Bach however. She is a romantic pianist, wildly expressive, and known for her interpretations of Brahms, Liszt, etc. She takes liberties which many enjoy, others eschew. She produces a big, powerful metallic brassy sound, liberally uses the sustain pedal, etc. Her treatment of Bach can be over the top.

Some years ago, she and Claudio Abbado had a falling out over what cadenza to use in a recording of Mozart’s Piano Concerto 23. She wanted the cadenza later written by Busoni (a Romantic late 19 c., early 20 c. pianist/composer), Abbado insisted on that originally written by Mozart. As a result, the recording was never released.

Music befitting a beautiful, cool, sunny Saturday morning. 24/96 FLAC.

A wonderful album.

All the Monk discussions above has me in the mood. 24/96 FLAC.

Kendrick Lamar ist great!

My new exploration is Masego. He’s very creative, I got every file available on Bandcamp.

And this Violent Femmes record we heard a lot in studies.

The SACD. Been too long since I’ve enjoyed this session.

Jazznut, if you like Kendrick Lamar try Danny Brown (shown below–he is a trip), but only if you are not offended by language, content, etc. Kendrick Lamar says Danny Brown is the best in the business. I agree.

I do not know Mesago but will check him out. That is what I love about this thread. I love all types of music and this thread gives me a ton of ideas.

Finally, relatively speaking, I only recently discovered bandcamp. It’s a great source of new music.

Yes indeed, thanks much, will also check your hint!

With Masego you can start with “Pink polo” and his latest “Loose thoughts” (which unfortunately only is available by streaming platforms, not even at Bandcamp, no download).

If you go further back then you’ll hear various things nteresting styles he touched.

While we’re discussing streaming files against physical media here, new artists don’t even offer downloads anymore. I have difficulties getting familiar with this, not so my son.

Who knows, maybe in future we don’t have non compressed digital files anymore, but only streaming platforms and the limited quality like MQA they offer plus vinyl for freaks.

Ran across this on eBay. My Dad had one. Many of Sunday night, I had to listen to Floyd blaring thru these crappy speakers. After a twelve of Bud and half bottle of Beam, I am sure my Dad did not much care about the quality of sound.

Anyway carrying on the tradition for my kids’ sake… at least I have a nice system.

Where do you come from? Where do you go?
Sorry that’s nothing you would need to know
Well, my back has been to the wall for so long, it seems like it’s stuck
Why don’t you break my heart one more time just for good luck?
