What are you spinning right now?

The double 12” 45 of Beck’s “Colors”. Sitting underneath, on deck, is an old-school 45 single from HPBooks of the Beatles Lady Madonna, which I actually bought for the B-side, “The Inner Light”, an early George Indian-influenced thing. One of my brothers must’ve had the single when I was growing up, and while Lady Madonna was a cool song, The Inner Light just spoke to me at the time. At least a couple of decades went by with my thinking of it off and on, humming it in my head, yet never hearing it, except on very rare occasions on the radio.

.

I realize “Spinning” doesn’t necessarily mean vinyl, and sorry to go on about this one, but I think this 45 release deserves to be acknowledged for its cover art, and the (almost lost) Art of Cover Art generally. It’s a good Beck album, not a favorite for me, some great singles…and the recording is funky (to me, including the sound of this pricey LP set…so don’t buy it for sonics on my sayso) compared sonically and musically with Morning Phase, Odelay, Sea Change…Guero, The Information…

But, Jeebus…beautiful album art. Here is just some of it. The front cover has a hexagonal cutout which contains/shows four thick clear plastic 12”x12” bits layered ontop of one another - you can reorder them if you want…

Vinyl, HDD, streaming, CD, SSD, LaserDisc, tape - all are welcome! (as we expressly made clear at the beginning of this thread).

Thanks, man. My head is spinning. I’m thinking of joining a Dervish Cult. Does that count? ; )

Wait - why does it look like the room is spinning?

My ex-wife’s Priest’s mother married Beck’s father! True story.

His first self-published album is good but the recording leaves a lot to be desired, Second Album, yeah!

ensemble pieces by Arturo Fuentes (*1975)

This newly released expansion on the venerable “Live Stock” LP has more face-melting guitar solos than you can shake a stick at … solid sound quality, too!

I’m listening to the first disc of the Mobile Fidelity SACD of Miles Davis, “Bitches Brew” --this features the original mix. It’s been a longer time than usual since I’ve spun this and it’s the first focused listen to the system I have now with the Monoblocks.

If I were art director of the ad below I would have cut “Jazz Rock Fusion” and the line would be “A Masterpiece.” It’s really its own animal this set of collaged recordings; and for me it’s like a time machine to hear it now. . . I think of different times this album has been a part of my listening rotation, different systems, different versions of “me,” shared with different friends. And I hear the future, the past, an enthusiastic then “present” to the music reproduced. . . For my listening world and for others this is a studied suite of compositions. The remix version shows a brilliant studio recording. But this original mix is like jungle music to me, there’s more myth and majesty.
And the SACD set is a fantastic listen.
