Villa-Lobos: The Complete Solo Guitar Music

A favorite, a soul and funk masterpiece.

Excellent choice!

Ms. Podger is superb performing this music.

me too...I purchase the subscription every year. Great stuff!!!

I have purchased every year of Road Trips and then Dave’s Picks, but I may stop. . . I have so much and don’t listen to most of them that often.

A show from the recently completed summer tour. The whole tour is available for download (mp3, red book, 96/24, DSD64 (at a significant premium)) or physical CDs from livedead.co or livedownloads.com. It’s a long ways from the cassettes we traded in college. Highlights from this show include New Speedway Boogie, Candyman, and Dear Prudence.

For those not paying attention, this version of the Dead includes Bob Weir and the two drummers from the original band, with John Mayer on lead guitar. Sadly, not Phil Lesh. Of all of the would be Garcia successors, to my ears John Mayer stands head and shoulders above the rest. He brings a fresh perspective while still clearly respecting the music. Who woulda thunk it?

An ignorant here. To what do you refer? All I understand it has something to do with the Grateful Dead.

Currently the Dead offers a subscription service for four annual releases (one each quarter) on CD called the ā€œDave’s Pick’sā€ series. Usually a complete show and also sometimes added highlights of another show. Three cds. You can also purchase these separately but there are limited quantities and they sell out fast. One release a year includes a ā€œbonus discā€ which is only available to subscribers.

This series started nearly five years ago. . . a similar subscription program before was called ā€œRoad Trips.ā€

The whole tour is available for download in DSD64? Very cool, but I'm guessing expensive...

A single show on CD is $25, same for 96/24 downloads. The shows generally run about three hours. There’s a $20 premium for DSD64 (so almost double the 96/24 cost) and no indication of the original recording format. I got the 96/24 tour package. Sound quality is very good. I also have all the Dave’s Picks, Road Trips, Dick’s Picks, box sets, etc., etc. I was at UC Berkeley from 1974-1981 and saw a lot of shows then (starting in 1976) and thereafter but it was never my life or the only music I listened to. I was one of those fans who was actually there for the music rather than the lifestyle (and yes, there were and still are a lot of us out there).

I have a lot of stuff that I have not listened all the way through yet, and not just the Dead (but more of that than anything else, given the sheer volume of material they have released and continue to release). Something to do in my retirement (getting closer and closer).
