yes sorry i normally put “uk pounds” but i guess that is open to question too!
Taking an educated guess, I would place the Tympani 1D (fourth and last iteration) introduction around 1977. We had replaced the 1C and set up the 1D with Wendell Dillard’s assistance at Paul Heath Audio in Chicago. My avatar photo shows me with them in my apartment about a year later.
AI places the Magnaplanar Tympani series production from 1973 thru 1978. The Tympani 1D was the last.
It has been some time so my memory is a bit foggy on the specific dates, but I believe they were introduced in 1978. Typical pairing was with Audio Research gear. I purchased mine slightly used at Champaign Audio. The original owner sold them to me on consignment for the same reason I ended up selling them as I found them to be impractical. A friend wanted them more that I did so they moved on.
Just curious as to why you ask, considering it was 45+ years ago.
The product line has come a long way IMO, and the 3.7r was the last Maggie I seriously considered.
I wouldn’t mind hearing the Magnepan 30.7
2014 Mac Mini which the use in my system is used more rarely.
Sound Devices MixPre-3 for ripping vinyl.
1989 Linn LP12/Ekos/Lingo. Fully refurbished by LMC Entertainment (approved Linn Shop) and rewired by me for the DS Audio DS003 Cartridge. Old School/New School.
@weedeewop I find hi-fi history interesting.

The music moves me more than the gear😉
Heard them at Madison’s University Audio. IMO one needs the right space
How did the 30.7 sound in Madison?
I’ll sum it up this way, following the demo the dealer ended up dropping the line. It was rather odd, IME. If I were to purchase Magnepan today it would likely be the 3.7x.
Ouch!!
Let’s just say Wendell stepped in “it”.
having had the 3.7X in my listening room for a couple months now, I don’t think there’s much value in going toward the larger models. I wanted more deep base so I added DWM base panels. The combination sounds very close to the 20.7s for substantially less money. Also, 20.7s are too tall to fit in my basement listening room. That sort of force the decision on me.
