Is that a JL Audio CR-1 on the bottom of your rack?
Holy eagle-eyes @paul172! Indeed it is A CR-1. When I run two channel in the room now, I use dedicated two channel sources and preamp… Which meant that I had to have a dedicated two channel subwoofer crossover as well. This facilitates seamlessly sharing my Xilica DSP subwoofer controller and the Seaton subwoofer array between both two channel and multi-channel.
The Xilica 3060 has separately programmable inputs and outputs so I simply have one input assigned and programmed for stereo playback and one to multi-channel. The recent purchase and modification of an ARX RS-1 remote triggered stereo XLR input switch achieves the same seamless switching of the left and right mains loudspeakers between stereo and multi-channel. Now I just have to program a Harmony remote to simplify the remote control situation.
PS: The two poorly lit black components on the lower left are the Anthem AVM60 And Oppomod UDP203 used as the multi-channel front end. The 5 identical ATC SCM20ASL stand mount are actives. Soon I’ll be adding two Meridian 557 power amps to drive four new ceiling mounted Atmos channels. Just waiting on the arrival of the four install variants of the ATC SCM12 monitors. The shared Xilica subwoofer controller is center bottom.
As for the rest of the stereo gear: The two shiny boxes on the top shelf are my Coincident Statement (DHT) Linestage. The phono stage on the far right middle shelf is one of the ten Foundation Research V5 units ever made. A Jay’s Audio CDT2 MkII redbook transport top center and the PS DirectStream Dac beneath it. Last but not least, the Oracle Delphi V on a Grand Prix wall mount sports a SME V arm and Benz LPS along with a Turbo PS.
I noticed the AVM 60 and the oppo also. I have the oppo I’m getting ready to do an oppomod to my unit. I also run a dedicated two channel equipment and multichannel to my dual JL Audio F113’s and home theater LFE so I’ve been considering a CR-1! By the way I think I commented before on your pictures but again, amazing room!!! Looks like you have a JVC projector with an Isco anamorphic lens? Very sweet set up. I have a Sony 4K Projector with a panamorph lens. I’m getting off topic I’m trying to run balanced to the subs but I think the only logical non loss of transparency is going with a CR-1. Hope you are having success with your oppomod I can’t wait to mod my 203 to run I2S to my PSA DSD! Thanks for sharing your awesome system with us! Paul
Again @paul172, either you’ve been blessed with the eyes of a hawk or you must work for the NSA 'cuz I couldn’t tell what the two black components in my rack were from that pic! Yes to the PJ particulars too, the big Isco 3L anamorphic lens on a motorized sled and a JVC DLA-X990. I bought the Oppo with Oppomod’s deluxe LPS and disc stabilizer mods along with a silver wired Furutech IEC receptacle already installed by the previous owner. I’ve since bought the Oppomod I2S output card but not had time to install it. The intent is to have the Oppo do double duty as a stereo SACD and DVD-A transport into the DirectStream as I have a decent collection of hi-res disc media which the CDT2 doesn’t support.
Dual REL S/5 SHO
Received the REL’s today… wow
I’m still breaking in and haven’t really messed with settings or placement, but they really sound good. My Encore’s reach pretty far down, but this is another level.
I have them hooked up using the high level to my amps, and LFE via HT processor (I’ll mess with that later:)).
Congrats on the new REL sub!
I have been using an Earthquake Mini 10” and it blends in with my pair of Tannoy bookshelves very well. Hopefully one day I can upgrade to a REL
Ditto (Dual Rel S/3 SHO) with Magnepan 1.7s
I use a Rythmic 12 inch. It to has a servo controled cone.
Same here.
Just bought me a REL R-205. Getting it dialed in but so far I like it.
I’m using a REL T/9i to supplement my B&W 700 S2 speakers. I’ve been playing around with the REL’s crossover and gain adjustments and think it’s about where it needs to be. You can definitely tell the bottom end is extended but it all seems to be seamlessly coming from the B&Ws. In my case, the crossover and gain settings are both well below where I first started.
I have a pair of REL Acoustics Tzero subwoofers complimenting my Anthony Gallo Acoustics Reference Strada speakers in my office system. The office is about 13 by 13 feet and the stereo pair of RELs are more than enough for the room.
FWIW.
I am not into huge boom. I have a number of systems with subs.
My reference system has an MJ Acoustics Windsor. It is an offshoot of REL. The thing is instead of made in China it is still made in the UK. It is very musical but does not do boom. However The Wilson Chronosonic alone have plenty of oomph themselves. The MJ just compliments and reinforces them. It goes down to 5HZ per my measurement. That is in room. They quote 13HZ freestanding. It still will not rattle your gut.
Google it if you like. I think some folks may be interested. Unfortunately in the US it is big money. In the UK the darn thing is only like $1500USD.
Consider me one of the “converted”. Just added an SVS SB3000 to my system which shouldn’t require a sub (main speakers are capable of 20Hz down only 2dB). And yet this really added some needed low end weight and foundation I couldn’t live without now. The SVS is really easy to fine tune as well with their app that allows fine adjustment of filter cutoff, phase, etc. Getting really close to well integrated with mains in a matter of hours. Highly recommended.
If you are running one try it with two!
Curious, where did you end up crossing it over?
No space for a second sub just yet. Will consider where to place another, but the living room is getting full and my wife is incredibly accepting of lots of room treatments and rather large hybrid electrostats. Don’t want to push things too far.
Edit: Also since my main speakers are quite full range (lower cutoff is 20 Hz at -2dB) I can cross over the sub quite low (36 Hz presently). This makes the sub-bass very non-directional and I can’t tell where the sub output is coming from (virtually no directionality issues).
The SVS app is very flexible. I’m not done fine tuning, but the current settings are below and work very well with my full range main speakers.
- Level = -14dB
- Low Pass Freq. = 36 Hz
- Phase = 50 degrees
- Polarity = Normal
- All EQ and Room Gain Comp are OFF
My LMS (Loudspeaker Management System) is configured as Stereo 2-Way with Mono Sub and I have a single Mogami XLR to RCA from the LMS output #5 to the sub LFE input (LFE disabled to allow for SVS internal filter tuning).
Very pleased with the result and at $1k this thing is tough to beat.
In my previous residence, I ran 2 REL s/3 sho’s with my Focal 1028 be’s. My room was a 12 x 12 with almost half of the rear wall open to other rooms. Using a modified near field setup, I just did not want to turn that system off. The RELs really completed the system to my ears.
