A single REL G1. Because my speakers have useable bass into the high 20s I can set the crossover quite low, get good integration, and no real sense of where the sub is located. I thought of getting a second G1, but then noticed, when outside the house with the system on, that I was getting pretty good deep bass response many feet away from the house (my neighbors can attest). I’ve concluded that there is no part of the room which is not well pressurized by the sub at the frequencies I am using it - 15 to ~25 Hz. If I were using it with speaker that measured flat to, say, 50Hz but might actually roll off in-room before then, I might think of two because they’d be integrated at a much higher frequency, which could give away the location of the sub.
Wasn’t sure exactly what thread in which to post this question… Hope this is alright. I recently replaced the stock cables on my two REL subwoofers. The difference is remarkable! The bass sounds more like a note, rather than simple ambient tones or air pressure. I can’t believe the difference. The funny thing is that when I bought the subs, REL suggested to me that while the interconnect makes a difference, power cables are a waste of money.
My question is this… Am I really late to the game here, and the positive impact of power cables on subs is well-known, or do others also live with stock cables for their subwoofers?
Also, a shout out to Voodoo Cable for producing for me two excellent custom cables to suit my exact needs. They suggested cables suited to digital products, as the amps in my subs are class-D. Anyone else have any thoughts on types of cables, if I need to upgrade down the line?
Really curious about others’ experience with this.
this logic (mostly) falls on deaf ears…
I also upgraded my subwoofer cables. I was using Audioquest Irish red and went to Audioquest husky and the difference was huge!
Did you change the power cables or the signal cables?
In my experience power cables don’t have much/negligible impact on class D amps, signal cables yes but not if driving subs with a high or speaker level signal.
Ha, I’m a tweaker so I changed both, of course! I added a custom high-level connects years ago, which made a small difference. Last week, I added the power cables, from Voodoo, and they made a GIGANTIC difference.
I also have a PS Audio AC-12 on my Bel Canto integrated, a class-D amp. That also made a huge positive difference, as have other power cables, so I think cords affect class-D amps the same as other classes, at least for my amp.
Well, there you go. If you realized a positive difference that’s great. Maybe the stock power cables were passing ‘noise’ to the amps that the Voodoo cables are not.
There isn’t and likely never will be any consensus.
I’m using Pangea AC9SE on both subs. JL Audio Fathoms F113’s. I hear a difference.
Thank goodness – otherwise this would be a really boring forum…
I can’t see any of my gear save for the speakers so I have my wife switch or not switch power cables for me. She doesn’t tell me which one she switched to or none while I’m out of the room. I don’t hear a difference between power cables with my low end Rythmik servo subs with class D amps but I do for all my source, preamp and amp, as well as speaker and interconnect cables.
Please don’t take from my comments that you won’t or didn’t hear a difference. My only intent was to share my experience.
My Analysis Plus cables for my REL subs make a huge difference. Upgrade power cables not so much.
A single REL S/3.
This is something I have been wondering about. Thanks for clarifying.
One Rel T/5i
Rel S5, Audio pysic Luna , Rel q201e
A single Rel Special Carbon.
I recently got an SVS SB16 Ultra to replace a misbehaving Revel Ultima Sub30. Holy b@lls! It was as if the Revel wasn’t even trying! I haven’t calibrated it (brilliant app for that), but very impressed so far. Oh, and the SVS was 1/3 the price of the Revel, over ten years later.
I used to have one SVS SB16! Great subwoofer and I wish I had two! When I got my JL F113’s there was two and they worked better for my system. I would of loved to hear 2 SB16’s together! That sub moves a lot of air once set up properly it will sound great in many systems!
I recently bought my second sub. So I now have an (i) an SVS Ultra 13 pb (operated sealed) and (ii) an SVS 4000sb. I have wired the subs in “stereo mode” connected direct from power amp outputs via Jensen transformers. I calibrated via REW software initially and then gradually moved the sb volume back to get a balance I love. Each sub is at -30dB volume and 50 Hz cross over with -12dB roll off.
I love the result. For years IO though subs were not fro hifi stereo listening - what a waste over all those years. Its all about dealing them back so they add warm and a powerful base for the full range floor standers to operate in.
I did the same for years! Running the LFE only on my subs not understanding they offer so much more!!!
