What would you like to hear for the next Octave records album? [POLL]

Didn’t the record Into thin Air at Don Grusins Studio? Seems they could rent a church or other facility with good sonics for a 4 piece. All depends on how much the want to spend on the venue and schlepping all the equipment to it.

And it sounds like it as well, I would like to hear a live 3 or 4 piece playing live to the absolute degree possible.

I love the sound Pierre gets on the Mapleshade recordings, but sometimes his artists can leave a little bit to be desired. I imagine that for all kinds of reasons, logistic as well as economic, his stable is limited to regional talent for the most part. I hope Octave doesn’t fall victim to the same thing.

Don’t get me wrong - the Mapleshade artists are all infinitely more talented musicians than I could ever hope to be, but the history of recorded music has spoiled us to expect the finest of artists, doing perfect work, all reproduced in our living rooms.

This is one of the criticisms I too have of the Mapleshade recordings. Pierre also appears unconcerned with running his signal so hot he gets analog distortion, instrument balance can be way off, etc.

But I am glad he is out there and is making these recordings available.

Personally I love it.

I want to hear all the unadulterated live performance just as it was hot and all.

Imo too many recordings these days are too polished too britney spears “hollywood”. There is less grit, less turn it up to 11(last concert of the artist’s career) type performances when it’s not live. It’s these imperfections that really make that performance unique and brings out the soul of the music.

JT Nero/Birds of Chicago

Smooth Jazz for sure…

3 or 4 piece jazz band with (optional) vocals

Please do something with Eva Cassidy recordings I don’t know what. But she is bringing tears to my eyes. I feel DSD would be able to do her music justice.

Eva Cassidy is awesome, agree.

An unlikely project. Her family is exceedingly protective of her recordings and all one could attempt is to tweak the existing mastering.

How about a local talent, Denver, Ron Miles? Team him up with Bill Frisell. I know, Ron is now on contract with Blue Note. It would sell and Ron’s style seems to fit the Octave “tone”.

I just happened upon Mr. Miles name in a Google search, and saw that he passed 2 weeks ago?

There is an Octave recording due out soon with Ron Miles.

A jazz octet playing Ellington compositions. One can dream.

Joel Ross!

I believe that is correct. I think he passed a couple of weeks after making the recording for Octave.

So sorry to hear this. My thoughts go out to his family and loved ones. It does sound as if he left one hell of a legacy behind, though. I’ll be purchasing his SACD when it becomes available.

Me too. I like his work. Sad to see him pass, too young.
