Listening to my rip of CD4 from the 5CD box set. At 28.5 minutes, this version of “Black Napkins” from NYC’s Palladium on 12/29/1976 is longest of which I am aware.
I saw the 1988 Zappa band four times: Three shows in early February at the Beacon Theatre in NYC, and once more in mid-March at Memorial Auditorium in Burlington, Vermont. This is an excellent document of that tour, which got cut short due to internal band squabbles (hence the album title).
The new Halloween 81 sampler CD is streaming on Tidal and Qobuz. I just listened to “Montana” on both and the Qobuz stream destroyed the Tidal stream for sound quality!
“Black Napkins” is one of Frank’s “three signature guitar tunes” that, after his death, the Zappa Family Trust requested that no one else perform or record (the other two are “Zoot Allures” and “Watermelon in Easter Hay”). See Charles Ulrich, The Big Note: A Guide to the Recordings of Frank Zappa at pp. 249, 705, 709 (2018).
Apparently, these guys did not get the ZFT memo. Still, it is pretty good.
