But see my post here:
First congratulation on your new BHK pre…will be very good
upgrade…
Don’t do fuses until your BHK pre is burned in too many variable
all at once…
Take it one step at a time!!! Get a feel of the BHK pre’s
merits…then go from there…
Best wishes
@elk I did read your post, as I know nothing about recording studios I cannot comment.
I quoted Jason Kennedy above, in consumer audio there’s no real need these days for second gain stages with line level sources, especially with 91dB speakers.
Back to the OP’s question.
The answer is yes. Period.
Aye, Vern, I just buy expensive preamps to waste my money - because they do not improve the performance of my system…
You might as well spend it. I dont think it will do you much good if you take it with you
Not having a preamp is like having a car without a steering wheel. If you want to switch directions you have to stop, jack it up, point it in the new direction, let it down, and go down the new path. I would rather just turn the wheel.
Actually a car without a throttle
Or a steering wheel if you want to use it to change sources.
Damn this is too deep

I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
Time for waders…
Or barn boots at least.
But of course…barn boots and waders will definetly improve
the sq of even the most upscale of gear…
I hate you guys… every time I ask a question… I end up spending money
Lesson: There are no free advices in PS Forum… somebody is always going to pay
Example
-
Do I need a better network switch? - costed me 1000$ (EtherRegen, LPS to power ER and enhanced Cisco cage)
-
Do I need a power conditioner or generator? - Costed me $5000 to get PS15
-
Do I need a enhancement to OR? Costed me another $4000 to get Sonore SE
-
Then came mods… Edcore, external PSU, new fuse for PS15…
-
Now pre BHK…
I’m deleting my account… ignorance is bliss… this journey started with a 1000$ defenitive speaker with 500$ denon receiver and now I work extra time to save for audio and beg my wife for forgiveness often
Ps: Above is only example… I have not added other questions I asked like, do I need a better power cord? Is farad better than SBooster? Is Roon Nucleus better than Nuc? Should I buy a different speaker? Is IS2 better than USB? What do you think about evolution USB?
Ho forgot the AQ dragon game you all started
This is the “old guys spending their kids inheritance on stereo” channel.
Dont do dat…
You’se is jest another 'file like the rest of us…
Last year…P15…Parasound JC5 and DS dac…
You will finally land on happy times
Define “need.”
Yes it works, but the sound can be better yet with gain staging.
And, as already noted, there may be yet more reasons why adding a preamp can improve the sound, none of which rely on distortion.
Time for a drink.
