Your Next Upgrade? (Part 2)

Thanks Donald…

You are right…my system’s ability to resolve is ever improving,
with subtleties in the music ever more evident.

Wouldn’t say multi better than sine nowadays, just different forms
of musical presentation…all of which are enjoyable…just varies
with the recording…

Best wishes

I have something similar, not allowed all those exposed wires, has to be raised off the ground by 1m and much better security.

Each phase has a 100A fuse. The first of 4 or 5 fuses/breakers before the audio system. They cost about $30 each. They have seals fitted by the electricity network. Definitely not Purple.

You can also use plumber’s Teflon tape to get the IEC more firmly into the connector. Only not for Schuko plugs, otherwise you will isolate the ground connection. Dangerous

I had the regular version of this and loved it. Great price that will hold its value. Would still have this pre but for my MBL tomfoolery. I liked the AR 6 over the BHK Pre.

Good to know, thank you.

I missed something…

What is the “regular version”?

TIA

There’s a 6 SE version which is currently available.

There used to be the 6 version:

@vkennedy61 is spot on. AR did the same upgrade path with the earlier Reference 5 with Reference 5SE edition. I just realized it is the normal 6 for sale. I think AR charges around 2k to upgrade to the 6SE.

Okay my big upgrade has arrived. Decware SEWE300B #016 arrived this afternoon.

It is both the most beautiful amp I’ve ever owned, and the heaviest. The copper endplates for the transformer are big and beautiful. And these are probably the nicest tube sockets I have ever had in an amp.

The initial impression is that it sounds an awful lot like my SE84UFO3 Monoblocks, but with a sense of a LOT more power, I have a very different gain structure going between components right now.

My Decware HR-1 speakers seem to really like the amp.

As far as looks and build it really does wow me here in the system. And I think I’ll really like the sound as it progresses.

Would love to see a picture or two…

I saw another thread saying the upgrade to SE was 3k. I would call AR and find out for sure the pricing. If I still had the 6 I would have gone down the SE route. AR has always provided relative value with their upgrade process. I would offer a lower price on the used listing you originally showed and budget an upgrade. It would be a screaming buy at that price if it was the 6 SE. Sorry for my original mistake thinking it was the 6SE.

No problem…I just wanted to understand your reference.

It seems like this could be an end-game preamp, but I wonder about its age and potential longevity (circa 2016 or so…?).

Thanks again.

I’m not a picture guy I am afraid.

If you did the upgrade and they really do go completely through it should again be as new. Just know you will be basically tube restricted (two brands from same company) If your not a tube roller then not a problem.

This level of ARC gear ages as gracefully if not better then McIntosh. They also service everything they have ever made.

I came very close to getting a 160S.

Upgraded AR Ref 6 to SE in December 2020 by Reference Sounds (dutch importer) at €3600,- charge. It was well worth the €€€, coupled to my recently acquired dCS Vivaldi Apex and AR Ref 160S it’s playing the stars of heaven.

I use the REL Bassline Blue line array connectors, AudioQuest Rocket 44 cables to amplifiers and also have a full loom of BJC cables specifically made for the arrays and amplifiers. I had the opportunity to help with the build/testing and implementation of cables as a beta tester.
