Your Next Upgrade? (Part 2)

Do you mind sharing which power supplies?

Thanks

@Philip_Gan The BACCH-SP is still settling in, but I am very pleased with my purchase. Its DAC is truly excellent, equaling or exceeding that of my MU2 even before the filters are applied. I was up frightfully late last night listening to song after song. The sound is rendered utterly free of the speakers and room boundaries, not something I thought I had an issue with before.

It’s expensive, but awfully good

Congratulations on your purchase. I am very happy for you! That’s around AUD$35K I think. Serious dough. My wife has different priorities for our discretionary spending though. My next upgrade will probably be a DAC, but not likely reaching to Adio.

With a B4M setup you can rest easy. It’s 85% of the SP gear. The SP gear offers substantial power upgrades and just about enough I/O for anyone. If you only stream the only advantage is the better, calmer sound.

I listen to my B4M setup way more than my SP setup. I have zero complaints from that setup. Considering I use the smallest Vivid speakers available, with no sub at all, the bass feel I get from my simple desktop system is remarkable. I was stunned when I first heard it.

When I listening to the main room I pay more attention, and it is rewarded.

If you can swing it, the adio will please you. If you can’t so will a B4M setup.

Us retired guys don’t go to bars and chase girls anymore. The savings from that alone justifies the SP class.

Four weeks now with my latest update, the Decware Dynagrid Jr. rectifier replacement component.

(Decware’s photo)

This week I added a new 845 tube into the mix, as far as I can discern identical in internal structure to the Linlai stock tube, except that it has a carbon lining to the internal surface of the glass. My favorite rectifier in use before and my 300B ouput tubes feature this carbon lining and I have really preferrred their sound, so I thought this 845 version would take me further in a direction I would prefer.

Well, I think this new 845 is blooming a bit, probably needs a few dozen more hours to come out of its deep sleep, but. . .

I believe Steve Deckert when he says that there is little difference between 845s in the Jr. and expensive ones would not really show value for money. . . I would describe it as a “bit more than subtle” difference between the stock and this 845-T2BE. BUT. . . how I have configured my system is on a hill of subtleties and the subtle difference here between these two tubes is like the cherry on top of the sundae to me. Sound is just right, specifically in that I can listen to less than ideal recordings (of which I have many more times than ideal ones) with more pleasure. The Jr. and this tube has corrected a bit of leanness that I was experiencing with some material. A nice move forward in sonic presentation.

And these were not that expensive for 845s, 100 dollars each all in, I’m glad I took a chance on them.

Adding and adjusting the system to the JR. has been akin to professionally cleaning an audio window and seeing a bit farther into the distance on a bright clear day.

Linn introduced an upgraded motor control power supply replacing the one in their Radikal 2 controller. They call it Utopic.

Had to scratch the itch to upgrade but not in the market to spend serious money. The XP22 is on the radar but not in the foreseeable future.
Hence, ordered Isoacoustics Orea Bronze footers to replace the minipucks under the SACD transport. Not itchy anymore!

Hi Al,
Yes, I’ve had the BACCH4Mac for a few years now and enjoyed the latest firmware update.
Interestingly, I also still use a Mano II streamer with separate I2S input to my DSD Mk2 DAC. It sounds better than using the bypass bin on my Mac Mini running BACCH, but I generally prefer the BACCH mode.
When the time comes for my DAC upgrade, I’ll post about it. I’m narrowing to two main contenders, but will try to arrange a direct shootout between them.
Cheers
Phil

That’s my experience with Bacch. It’s hard to understand how much musical details you seem to miss without Bacch processing. Makes you want to discover more songs that we’ve all heard a 1000 times before.

My attention is currently focused on my car audio system. That’s where I came across a company I knew from before. Steinmusic deals with sound optimization. However, Mr. Stein also builds hi-fi components and speakers. His large speakers feature tweeter and midrange horns and an incredible number of speaker drivers in an open enclosure. Each speaker also has a subwoofer, also in an open design, with a truly unbelievable diaphragm area. I’ve never heard such a deep bass range and sub-bass from any other speaker before. According to Mr. Stein, the subwoofers have a linear response down to a frequency of 17 Hz. In the song “Make Us Stronger,” I could hear ultra-low tones I’d never heard before. I just tried out an Acoustic Disc on each of my speakers at home, which helps improve the soundstage in the car. I placed one on top of the speaker cabinet, which sounds a bit more airy. However, I prefer attaching a disc to the back of the speakers. The vertical imaging is more pronounced. The stage presentation gains structure and depth. Regards, Andreas

The subwoofers are positioned behind the speakers and are not visible in the picture.

If you have a bus at home your may fit one in to play mono music.

I took the extra feet off my REL Carbon Special, now using just REL’s feet that came with the subwoofer. Sounds good.

Having moved to California in 2004 from NC driving my GMC Envoy XL (one of the largest SUV’s at the time) it wasn’t long before I realised that vehicle was just way too big for CA parking lots. So, I bought a Porsche Boxster with a high end audio system (thought was, well why not, I getting one of the coolest little sport cars). What a waste of money. Unless parked with the engine off, I probably couldn’t have told the difference from a cheap boom box. But my point is this: I believe now that I own a PMG DAC and Pre that one of the magics of the series is the very low, cumulative noise level.

Paul, had you been using the Stack Audio feet?

I had borrowed the Stack Audio feet a while ago, and gave them back to Greg (a while ago). I then used 4 of the 8 the Gaia II feet that I have lying around, which raised the subwoofer up higher from REL’s original design *same as Stack Audio). Yesterday I decided to go back to REL’s original design and give myself time to absorb any sonic changes to the system.
