Thanks to both of you for your help. I was hoping I didn’t have to access the back of the PWD. It’s a bit of a pain with my set up. Oh well.
Thanks again, Dale
All installed. Everything went perfectly. Don’t know about a sound improvement. I’ll have to live with it for a few days.
I don’t know what is going on but this version of 2.20 sounds great on my dac. In the past, 2.20 has been unlistenable (horrid, grainy, tinny treble and no bass). I found a 2.02 version that sounded good and gave me screen support. This 2.20, however, sound different from any 2.20 version I have tried. It is excellent. I prefer it to 2.02. How can these 2.20 versions sound so wildly different? Machine dependent?
Hi Paul, Can you shed some light on these mysteries? How can there be so many versions? Which are the real 2.02 and 2.20 versions? This has to be cleared up I believe before either version of WaveStream is launched.

I would be OK if PS Audio wanted to hit 'reset' on the the naming of versions to get it a bit more standardised. A separate webpage for this, with concordance table so people can follow the plot, would be really, really most exellent.

Amen on that and I imagine it would save EVERYONE oddles of wasted time!
The firmwares posted on the download page are
2.0.2 Feb 2012 and delivered with the upgrade kits.
2.2.0 Feb/March 2013 and reputed to be the latest set
This is the best I can do with my limited access to the treasure chest and Merlin.
We could ignore release dates for the legacy numbers if they are too hard to find, and start afresh with numbers and release dates for the new versioning.
Sh…, amazed by the postings here I have installed the new version on my PWD. Since then the bridge is gone :(( . This time I even can’t get it back using the restore.ub file. Neither rolling back to older 2.2.0 nor even 2.0.2 helped. Anybody’s having an idea?
Gordon often advises people to power the PWD down, taking off all inputs/outputs, sometimes even taking the power cord off, and letting it sit for a bit. Then power it up with no connections and see what happens. He might have more to say.

Gordon, is this the same 2.2.0 that audioslave said in his 6/6 post was best SQ ? BTW I agree it should not be this difficult.

yes

yes
:D
Who at PS can carry this noble mission forward?
MMMMM
I may get into trouble here… but, I would nominate Scott to lead the charge.
Oh yeah… :x I just updated from 2.20 pld107 to 2.20 pld109. I also updated the bridge from 13c to 14b after that. There is no going back. IMHO this is the best firmware combo to date.
And how much of the difference lies with the Bridge firmware vs PWD firmware? I get frustrated by people who change several things and say ‘this is much better’. Even more so when they attribute the change or a significant part of it to one of the several items changed when the procedure makes it impossible to determine.
While we have several reports that the ‘new’ PWD 2.2.0 firmware may be the best, they are all obfuscted by multiple changes made at the same time.
Please, when trying something new, change only one thing at a time. The scientific method may take a bit more time tomstart with, it willmsave time and confusion in the long run.
J.P.
Yeah sorry JP. I didn’t change firmware with the aim of being scientific in my analysis. I changed to be ready for wavestream when it is released for Mac. Take my comments about SQ as subjective, rather than objective.
If there is interest from the forum members I will happily do a more scientific breakdown and comparison.
Interesting.
In my system, I tried this [109] version and immediately recognized the old 2.2.0 glare and hardness. I am sure that different set ups and different rooms make big differences in which FW sounds best. We are fortunate to have a choice.
Stereophilus,
If not too much trouble go back to 13c and let us know what you think.

No problems Steven. I’ll do a proper comparison of each variable and list my system setup. It will have to wait till the weekend tho.
@sgrowan I spoke with Bob and he said the 2.20 you are referring to had a different compiling setup for the CPLD code.
