As We See It (Stereophile August 2024)

The August 2024 As We See It column in Stereophile centers around the author’s prediction of optical media’s future.

With the final production batch of certain optical drives, mentioned here, I’m wondering what everyone here predicts.

Also, what is known regarding CD mass production vendors? Are they closing?

I hope he is wrong. I fear he is not.
Who would have foreseen Vinyl killing silver discs?

Still billions of cd’s out there and new ones showing up everyday at used cd stores, and at much better prices than when they were at their peak.

I’m.not too worried about cd’s disappearing any time soon.

@Audioholic I agree completely. I hope those purging their CD collections locate buyers, volunteers or used stores for the media as I would hate to see them end up in landfills.

Production capabilities for new CD production is my main question and concern.

Octave Records is releasing all of its recordings on SACD.

You might consider supporting PSA’s efforts by picking up a few of their offerings.

Just a thought…

I’ve heard only anecdotes regarding pressing plants who still make SACDs but there seems to be one in Austria and possibly one in Asia. Hopefully, these companies will continue SACD pressing for a long time.

Please clarify if you have more accurate information.
