Great review! Only surprise was I thought you built them in Boulder …
I love the part where he says ultimately, the speaker designer aims for what he thinks sounds correct. I find I agree that your many creations sound correct. The first minute I listened to FR30s they made me jump. I heard a realistic cymbal that I can only hear with your speakers. So real it made me jump. I am a fan.
Are they built in China ?
Each weighing 26.62 lbs, the PS Audio Aspen FR5 is a new compact two-way stand-mounted loudspeaker. At $3500, it represents the least expensive of the four speakers in their Aspen series. The speakers and stands are shipped in two separate boxes with a total weight of 98 lbs. Manufactured by PS Audio in China, they are an in-house design by Senior Speaker Design Engineer Chris Brunhaver.
We build all of our electronics in boulder with locally sourced metal and most of the boards and materials, except our sprout. This is pretty unusual in this industry where the market realities are one of global sourcing for electronic components and manufacturing.
We would need a multi-million dollar facility to build speakers and do the level of paint finish and execution that we’re getting here. Paul risked a lot bringing me on to do speakers but I don’t think he’d want to risk building a factory and staffing it on top of that.
The factory we use builds products for martin logan, montior audio, B&W and others and we would not be able to offer this level of cabinet quality for the money if we did it ourselves, as they have a lot of scale.
Excellent explanation, Chris! Thanks.
Thank you.
any plans to make these available in the UK or Europe markets? Sorry, my bad - I just found them at a dealer here. Am considering a purchase.
