Should rename this thread “How to train or foil your cable to perform like a dragon?”
Step 1 Bring lots of Dollars
Step 2 No Dollars bring foil and pennies.
Step 3 don’t A and B the two after you wrap your budget DIY cable.
It’s a great idea you came up to save $ on cables. One of the major cost of expensive cables is on design to filter and block noises, and your copper tape idea is doing the same thing with little cost.
Of course, I don’t mean the mod would approach Dragon level. But my Cullen with golden armor has jumped in performance big time. It has the same charters as expensive cords. I think smoothness, less brightness, and cleaner music flow are the signatures of reduced noises. I also believe this mod will be more effective on cheaper cables than expensive ones because of the shielding cost.
I will have my Dragon 48 HDMI cable and my Wel Signature AES/EBU cable tomorrow. In the meantime the Audio Art Statement digital Coax cable has been sounding good for me as I have sold my Wireworld Platinum Starlight 7 HDMI and Platinum Starlight 8 AES/EBU cables last week. I am lucky I held onto the Audio Art Statement digital cable as a spare.
I got the new cables a couple of hours ago. They are nice straight out of the box. The Wel Signature is a more substantial looking cable but both cables are beautiful. To think both cables will only sound better with play.
The improvement in sound straight out of the box is obvious and dramatic. It’s like getting a new much improved component. Very exciting.
I noticed the same improvement along with some harshness on certain tracks that took a couple hundred hours to break in. The WEL cable I don’t have experience with but I have no doubt it will be the same break in/burn in experience.
The cables are beautiful. They sound good already so I will play the transport when listening but when away from the system I will let my streamer go on repeat but both cables sound good already.
As beautiful as the two cables I just received are my best sound is still from my Perfectwave transport to DSD. My Auralic Aries G2.1 streamer is no slouch especially with the Wel Signature AES/EBU cable but the transport still sounds more refined. I am loving my new sound from both sources.
Glad the cables are serving you well or should I say WEL? Sorry couldn’t pass it up.
Did you get another Dragon? Mine has perhaps 40 hours or so and already the sound is glorious. Compared to the Wireworld Platinum Starlight 7 it’s far superior. The Wel Signature is a gorgeous cable as well.
I had a discussion with @aangen about using the Dragon in a video setup. If you haven’t tried this yet then let me tell you don’t!! In my family room I have a Apple TV 4K connected to a Sony Oled. I swapped out the Audioquest Carbon with the dragon. Out of the box the black levels were an inky black that the Carbon can’t match! The colors were more vibrant and like with music when you discover sounds you have never heard the dragon delivers the same with video! I noticed things visually that I didn’t notice with the Carbon. Luckily I don’t spend a lot time with video otherwise I might need to get another Dragon!
If you don’t mind paying as much as your tv for a HDMI cable the Dragon will show you what your video devices are capable of!
I’m using my AQ Coffee HDMI for my 65 OLED and it is an eye opener, it is a big improvement over the vodka. I briefly switched to AQ Firebird48 and the Video becomes warmer and richer, but the bigger improvement is on the audio. It is happily serving the TV until the AirLens shows up.
I put my Siltech Anniversary Edition HDMI on my Sony TV and there it stayed. I would not put my Dragon on the TV because it has it’s place in my Audio and it’s too short.
You don’t need to spend so much on a video cable like the Dragon. There’s so much adjustments on a good TV set that you can use. I’m using my old WW Platinum S7 HDMI on my TV and I don’t think the picture could be any better. A better power cord can do just as much. Also plugging it into a regenerator does wonders like the P20.
It was an experiment not an upgrade for video. If I win the powerball I’m buying a lot of them!
I already have two Dragons for audio, so getting a third for video is not out of the question. But I will just have to get a longer piece to reach if it’s that much better.
Last night, on a whim, during the NHL hockey game, I placed half a sheet of 3M AB6005S under my Apple TV and Google Nest Endpoint which sit next to each other behind my LG curved Oled. Improved the 3 dimensionality of the skaters moving around the ice. Had to remove it and replace a couple of times to make sure I wasn’t imagining it. A remarkable tweak for less than $20.
@BuzzB
That is the same material I wrapped Edcor. Transformers in my DS DAC. The Thicker AB7050HF also works on Apple TV 4k. Too much and it muffles the sound. I placed squares over the large ICs. I saw a picture improvement along with sound. The Shunyata power cord also helps sound and picture of the Apple TV. By isolating its SMPS. Shunyata Research Venom 14 Power Cord
