Beta Test Impressions of the New Strata

I believe that’s why companies have beta tests… To work out the bugs… Be happy and comforted bugs are being found now… Don’t be anxious over software hiccups in a beta test…

Where I plug my Sbooster LPS (powers Cisco switch) changes the sound significantly. Ethernet Cat6A BJC from Cisco SG110 to Bridge/Strata.

SQ rank

(1) common line 15A - no audio gear

(2) 20A dedicated parallel to SP3 regenerator

(3) Plugged into SP3 regenerator

The Regenerator in both Sine/Multiwave is not doing good things for the Sbooster, sound is dulled and a bit lifeless. Also center image was a bit fuzzy and weird. Parallel to Regenerator is next, better but transients are still dulled; may be affected by backwash of regenerator.

The above SQ notes apply as well to sound over Toslink when watching TV.

Software glitches on a new product in beta testing are what we’d expect. We will fix them and when the final product comes out it should work just fine.

Octave will no doubt go through a similar process of glitch identification, though for Octave we’ve already ironed out numerous problems. In the end, like any software, there will be unforeseen glitches that beta testers find. Otherwise, there would be no need for beta testers.

Just changed out for the new Iconoclast BAV power cords (very nice!) and clearly Sine wave is the winner here. Multiwave was too focused and tight, not as musical as Sine.

As promised there’s new firmware for Strata. Go here: https://www.psaudio.com/support/downloads/ and download Strata V1.2.28 and load it into the unit.

So, download, unzip the files, remove the files from the folder, transfer the individual files from within the folder to a clean USB stick, place in the rear USB slot on the rear panel of Strata, and with the rear panel power switch, power cycle the unit. Strata’s front panel standby logo button will flash as the program’s loaded. Once finished and it comes back to life, remove the USB stick and then once again using the rear panel power switch, power cycle Strata.

And please post your experience with the update.

Just downloaded and installed V1.2.28 with no issues. Can confirm there in no volume at 0 now.

But, still cannot stream Qobuz 192/24 files; they still stutter and cut in and out. No problem playing 192/24 FLAC files from the NAS drive.

Will this be corrected? Could be a deal breaker.

Glad you got it downloaded so smoothly. Barry and I are curious if you’re going wifi or wired to the bridge. Sorry if you’ve already mentioned above.

Barry and crew need to look into this fix quite a bit deeper. Because of the nature of this issue, he wasn’t able to give a specific timeline.

Everybody make sure the files are not in the folder, move the install file to the root directory in the USB.

Thanks for the prompt reply Jamesh.

Am connected via WiFi. Have no problem streaming hi-res files or 4k video on other WiFi enabled components in the home, so I do not believe it is a WiFi issue.

Another related question: Should I be able to play DSD64 files on the Strata bridge from my NAS drive? It is unclear in the documentation. I am able to do so with the Auralic Aries G1, but not Strata. Info will come up on screen, but will not play.

This very much sounds like a network issue. I know you can stream video, but that’s different and highly compressed. We’ve seen this before. Is it possible to connect via ethernet just to check? Strata shouldn’t have a problem with 192 files. Please let us know.

Thanks for the reply Paul.

Running ethernet cable not an option. Is there a WiFi repeater, extender that you could recommend? I would be happy to give that a try.

FYI, Strata settings reads 57% for WiFi strength.

@chuck929 Run a network speed test on your phone close to the area the Strata is at.

Do not use a browser, download the Speedtest App

Just checked it, the bit rate of 24/192 is only 9.2Mbps, this is under the 4k streaming numbers which are around 10-15Mbps.

Hello, I had the same issue with Quobuz through my iMac direct wired to ethernet.
I think it is more of a bandwidth issue . I cancelled Quobuz and use Amazon HD.

@chuck929 have you considered using Audirvana for Qobuz ? That might be more stable than the current PS Connect app.

Great suggestion! Just checked three times, placing phone on the back of Strata running the test. Lowest of the three was 21.6 mbps. That should be plenty of bandwidth, correct?

Yes that should be plenty. Was that using the 2.4 channel?

You should really try Audirvana if you have a computer to do so.

Yes, speed test was the 2.4 band; thanks for the check on that.

So you think Audirvana may help my situation? Use that in place of PS Connect? I do have a Windows 10 desktop.

Or maybe a WiFi range extender to get more bandwidth to Strata?

I know it’s not fair to compare a $2,200 dedicated streamer to the Strata, but it is a little disappointing that I have no issues with 192/24 or DSD64 via WiFi with my Aries G1.

I would try the Audirvana trial for 30 days. Audirvana stores a lot of data in your computers ram serving as additional buffer. That buffer may provide a cushion that will make everything work better.

Plus in my opinion Audirvana sounds better than PS connect. Audirvana unzips the FLAC files potentially lowering work/noise in the bridge.
