BHK Pre Problem

This AM my pre amp display is dark, only the Stanby is lit, otherwise seems to be working/plays. Dim button on remote is inactive, it doesn’t turn off does it ?

Sounds like the display has packed in… Do you leave your display on all the time or switch off when playing… Heat issues ! The same thing happened to me with my BHK pre-amp a couple of weeks after delivery… In my case when the pre-amp was assembled somebody tightened the transformer hard-down with the main ribbon cable sandwiched between the transformer and the tray/chassis… Upshot, the ribbon shorted and blew the micro-processor;… fried components !! The display has a very small and flimsy ribbon attached to it, the other end of said small ribbon attaches to the micro-processor - “this is very fragile” - I could see going from my experience that over time with heat the display might be an issue… I didn’t like the look of the design and the feeble build quality of the screen display…!

The ‘Dim’ button does work. You could double check it by putting your preamp in standby and then powering it back on.

Leave on when playing but always leave in standby when not listening as I did last night, pretty sure it was working then, the Dim has worked in past though. Was yours doa or after short use ? Did you have to return it ?

Was just wondering if it had an off mode

My BHK worked fine from new then it just went dark one day when I switched it out of standby … I opened up the BHK pre-amp and it was obvious to see burnt out components on the controller - micro-processor… I contacted P S Audio with my findings; re: display micro-processor components fried and that the large main ribbon wire trapped below the transformer was damaged. I live overseas so the parts were shipped over to me… I carried out the repairs myself.

Like I said, the actual display screen is ‘very’ flimsy… There is a small ribbon attached/hard-wired to the display screen which plugs into the controller / micro-processer and this is a ‘weak link’… The display does get hot and it is possible your one has just died… I could see this as a weakness with the BHK pre-amp display. ( I now switch my display off all the time ) …AND: It would be really easy to damage the display during its installation - also plugging the small, flimsy ribbon onto the controller / micro-processer - it’s a job for small, steady hands and fingers… Hence I had to be extra careful !! It is hard to explain without seeing the workings of the device… The BHK is beautifully designed and constructed throughout but, the display and its small hard-wired ribbon is ‘very’ feeble !

I’m a do it yourselfer, but if you were in the US would you return ?

In your situation I'd return it to P S Audio..

Not so easy for me being overseas.! I do fly over to the US a few times a year but I don’t know if I could get the BHK Pre-Amp through in my hand luggage  And: Customs would probably tear it apart !!

Do you get - BHK Pre-Amp warmup on the screen ? Does everything else work, i.e. - volume, change inputs, etc… ‘Be careful not to move the balance control on the remote because you won’t be able the accurately centre it’ ! When my BHK went faulty I had no warmup displayed because ( I could still use the pre-amp, guessing the volume setting by the loud-clicks at 25 and 52, etc ) the controller/micro-processer died… I think in your case it will more that likely be the display screen and the attached ribbon cable…? Send it back …

We’ve had very, very few problems with the OLED screens. I am surprised to see this and think it might bew something simple. Any chance you could contact us or your distributor for help?

Sure I'll call tomorrow, came from you, thanks Paul.

Everything seems ok but display, I’m going to call them first, and thanks for your help Dirk.

It makes sense to get it checked out and Paul is now on the case … Your BHK Pre-Amp’s fault pretty much mirrors my Pre-Amp… My BHK fault was down to way it had been assembled, i.e. large cable was crushed beneath the transformer and the chassis which eventually shorted and blew up the micro-processer… Let me know the outcome.

Cheers roger,

Dirk.

No chance, I wouldn't attempt the carry it as carry-on baggage option (although I have twice carried a power plant as carry-on baggage to get it repaired, but the carry-on baggage rules then were far less restrictive than they are now). The proper thing to do for a return for repair is to get a return authorisation and return it to the place of purchase via FedEx/TNT/UPS etc. Sometimes things breakdown, you just have to grin and bear it and wear the cost of getting it to where it needs to go.

I was only joking !! Like carrying my BHK on the plane with it sticking up out of my inflight bag … At arrivals and through customs handed a plastic box to put metal objects in; my phone, keys, belt and BHK Pre-Amp…!

LOL, better than the power amp, that requires it's own seat!

Talked to James today Customer Service, he concluded it should be returned, his support was great and I’m sure it will be resolved. Also asked to update the f/w as the HT volume issue is a real problem in my setup, must remember to mute.

Good call on the f/w. I'd be curious to hear your impressions regarding the various changes in the new f/w over the beta version.
