Buzz in speakers with BHK Pre

I am getting new speakers in about a week…anyone think just using different speakers with different sensitivity might solve this? I kinda doubt it but will probably hold off on any major moves till they arrive

Some more info:

  • same noise right/left speaker?
  • same noise setting different inputs?
  • same noise plugging the XLR to M1200s and no other source plugged (even if not in use or off)?
  • did you try to change cables, same XLR but different model?
  • did you try swapping right/left tubes in BHK Pre?
  • did you try swapping right/left M1200s?

I know it’s an annoying process of try and error, but is needed. I suspect the issue is in the cables or connectors, maybe in the environment around them. It seems more a typical Phono/TT issue with RCA (where cables and correct grounding are normally the culprits).

Many experienced members here, then can give you a help.

Good luck!

Since the noise continues to come and go when you move or change things I still think it is related to either cable routing or just simply a bad cable connector. One of the reasons I suggested days ago to go through the hassle of removing all of the cables and start over with the cable routing. There just isn’t a short cut that works when you are trying to resolve cable related noise.

Experiencing the same, wonder if you have figured out any solutions? I plugged my headphones in my SGCD last night to see if it might be noise my speaker cables where picking up, and it was very present on my headphones. Also happening on all inputs. Have noticed it lessens by like 90% when I press the mute button….

I ordered a iFi ground loop eliminator from Amazon to see if it has any effect on the situation, but I suspect it is not gound loop…. Will report back if it helps.

Thank you for the reply.
-same noise both speakers

-think the m1200 only go into 1 inputs on BHK pre? so haven’t tried different input

-noise not there when m1200 connected and on …jut very faint his through speakers. Noise returns as soon as BHK pre boots up.

-tried changing cables and tried RCAS (which were even noisier)

-did not try swapping tubes as the noise has gone away when i moved the pre and other times ive gotten the noise to just be in 1 speaker

-you mean sapping the m1200’s (right in left -left in right?) i have not tried that

my only solution was i physically moved components around and the noise vanished. Foolishly I moved them again and it returned. I tried moving the stuff back to spot where things fine but noise there and couldn’t get rid of it. Im not exactly sure what made the difference when i moved things

Thank you -
I believe ive done that?
started with just the m1200’s on with speakers,…no noise.

as soon as i connect BHK pre the buzz starts. It exists even with just 1 m1200 plugged in.
nothing else connected to the pre. just the XLR from pre to m1200.

did i miss something?

you think there is a chance that my new speakers once connected will help?
kinda doubt it but different speaker sensitivity etc??? maybe??? foolish hope?

Both routing cables and physically swapping the units
I can only suppose what causes noise:

  • cables (but on both channel in this case. so i don’t think it’s the culprit)
  • single connector (same as above)

I then suggest to give a call to PS guys or @jamesh as it seems some faulty board or part inside the BHK Pre might cause the noise or is very sensible to something close to the unit.

Did you try to move the BHK Pre out of the rack far from any other component?

I hear a subtle white noise from speaker since I added the BHK Pre in my system but only very close to speakers (less than 50 cms) and this is quiet common. Not buzz at all and not comparing and vanishing.

I do not think different loudspeakers can provide better results, if you noticed buzz vanished moving components.

Thank you.
The only way i got the noise to go away was to move the pre out of the rack
It was wonderful
But i couldnt leave well enough alone and moved it back in again.
When the noise returned i tried moving it out of the rack again but was left with a buzz in just one speaker so i moved it back i to the rack…now back to its being in rack with buzz in both.

Given noise has gone away or moved to 1 speaker wouldnt that cause u to think the pre is fine and its interference from another component or interconnects?

Also i run things through a P3
Wondering if removing that might help?

Really appreciate the time you have given me.
Sent PSAudio an email last night.
But think the pre OK.
Thanks again
Tom

Just for curiosity.

It seems moving it something changes mechanically like boards, sockets wires, who knows.

If you open it are you able to remove and reseat the 2 little boards behind tubes? Some model are removable like mine others are sokdered.

Pay attention if remove them and reseat to put the pins exacltly in corresponding holes

I’m not sure what’s going on with your case, but I can tell you something that I found is the cause of hum and buzz in my system, it was the shielding on my interconnects.

I started to put a shield on the RCA interconnects between my turntable and phono preamp and most of the noise went away. Then I put shield on the XLR between my preamp and power amp, then no more noise. I also found that with other interconnects, some were more quiet than others.

Here’s the shield I use from Amazon.

Huh
Never heard of such a thing
You just run the XLR through it?

Any thoughts on diameter for an XLR cable?

Connector size not cable

Enjoy the sun!
