What is your cable budget and does it make sense given the level of the interconnected gear.
What is your tolerance for “exotic” cable features. Personally I will never own a cable that requires batteries. I’m sure the AQ DBS system is wonderful but that’s going too far even for me.
Did I say two? The mechanical size and flexibility of the cable and where it’s placed, etc.
I think much of the debates on cables are really a monetary issue. If all cables cost the same regardless of performance, will we still be here?
If there is ever a consensus among us about cables, I’d say it’ll be a really bad thing for this hobby. Where would the fun go? Tesla air wireless speaker cables that’s lossless?
My consensus, unfortunately, is that the SQ goes up when the prices move up too in cables and power cords, just like equipment. Once in a long while you may see an exception. But over the years with all the ones I have tried, I do not remember which one did that.
I have yet to find one (low price) that could beat the top of line cables. For the middle of line it is possible, but never one could beat the top dogs. Al knows this golden rule better than anyone (Luca too! ).
Many years ago Stereo Review Magazine basically believed that all amplifiers below a certain noise threshold sound exactly the same. Test it, if it’s below 1% distortion it’s as good as any other and will sound no different. Those were simpler times. We didn’t have the Internet to argue publicly at length.
Yeah, this fixation on low distortion and the “ideal” amplifier was all the rage back in the late 60’s and early ‘70’s. McIntosh had Distortion Clinics where you could bring in your gear and measure it. I was a snot nosed student but thought my Harmon Kardon Citation II preamp was up for the challenge. Besides,
HK claimed it was the closest thing to “a straight wire with gain” (obviously that quote stuck with me).
At the clinic the analyzer printout showed a ruler flat THD of .015% across the spectrum if memory serves me. I thought I had reached the plateau until a buddy of mine had me over to hear an ARC SP3A, D76, driving Dalquist DQ10’s (which we both had) playing a Sheffield Lincoln Mayorga disc. I could have been a bit high but that was a watershed moment. Lost my audiophile virginity and the pursuit of gear claiming great measurements.
