Just wondering how much the cost would be to demo a pair of FR20’s from PSAudio to NJ, and then return them if not for me?
Currently, as you know I have a pair of B&W 802D’s (first gen) and have a love/hate relationship with them. Recently retired, I am looking for a pair of speakers that I can relax and involved with the music, instead of constantly trying to adjust to sound correctly,
Right now they are sold out so not possible, but if you want to know in the future put a pair in your cart and then go to checkout it will give you the shipping cost to your zip code. So figure double that as the cost of audition.
believe it or not, years ago i had a pair of Polk Audio SRS-SDA 1.2 tl speakers that did everything wrong but provided me with amazing bass and full hi fi midrange
The low ceilings would provide somewhat of a challenge for a lot of “full sized” speakesr but the FR20s should do the job even though it will cost a bit to find out for sure. If you’re not willing to travel up and down the east coast it would be hard to know what else would. Your “local” dealer carries some “high end” brands but nothing that would appeal to me at least.
Get the shipping dimensions and weights from PSA and get a shipping quote. Consumer shipping rates will be higher than what PS Audio, TMR or any other such business are charged.
PSA’s shipper maybe your best deal. When I traded in my big monster (600Lbs+ 7’ tall), UPS (or FedEx I don’t remember) wanted $3k! I think I paid around $1k after calling PSA.
When I purchased my BHK 300’s PSAudio told me that if I were to return them, that shipping would be higher than they pay to ship to me, since they are a company.
The speaker boxes measure 21" x 26" x 57" and weigh 133 pounds each. They came with plastic bubble-wrap around the boxes, so that will make the shipping size a little bigger. Actual shipping weight might be a little higher than 133 pounds. I assume that PS Audio would want the pallets back, so there would be additional cost to return the one decent-sized wood pallet.
But once you have the FR20’s home, chances are you won’t want to send them back.
Friends of ours had those same speakers for close on to 30 years. I always thought they were darn nice especially with classical music. If you don’t mind, to satisfy my curiosity, what didn’t you like?
That’s the strange thing…I love my BHK preamp and BHK 300’s. I’ve auditioned other speakers, didn’t like the Magico, thought the Focal Sopra 3 were similar to the 802d’s that i have, the Sonus Faber Homage sounded nice, not sure tho… so little within driving distance.
When I spoked with Chris he told me that the FR20’s would sound dull in comparison to the 802d’s since i’ve had them for 20 years, but in the long run my ears would adjust and i’d appreciate the accuracy…so confused.
When I was 20, years ago, my uncle had a pair of Bose 901 Series 1, hangng from his ceiling, with homade 300 wat amplifiers, he was an EE, and I thought the world of it…I’m so terrible of remembering how stereos sounded.
