DirectStream and bridge

If I download a DSD file to my music server, what’s required to play it on the DirectStream?

Perhaps the most common solution will be a server that can deliver your DSD material as DoP. I believe that JRMC and foobar2000 can do so but don’t know about others. Certainly there are others and I am sure that more will be available in the future.

Some players may be able to deliver it over S/PDIF, AES/EBU or I2S but I don’t know any of those at this time. We are all learning at this time.

J.P.

It states the following ‘Put DSD into DirectStream, you get DSD. Put PCM into DirectStream, you get—DSD’ however this is decoupled from the Bridge. I would be disapointed if Bridge II cannot receive a single/double rate DFF stream and even DXD (?)

MinimServer can stream DSD either natively or via DoP (there is a setting to enable the latter).

Is it possible to make wishes for Bridge MKII? I would like Replay Gain functionality implemented.

foobar ;)

I am running from a Readynas.

@wingsounds13 =))

Well we do have a few clues.
An internal Bridge and an External Bridge models.

One of my questions is still unanswered. Do the external and internal versions have the same network and audio (pre)processing hardware?

The external Bridge we're working on will most likely be based on MPD. We've been working directly with the MPD team and they are a smart bunch of guys. It's a great player but needs a lot of work to become a product. We haven't defined everything it'll be able to do yet so when we get closer to a working model I'll let you know. I can tell you that one thing it should be able to do is plug in external shares like a HD or a USB memory stick, that kind of thing - and of course it'll be able to connect to any network share, do gapless, sing, dance, take dollars in its bra and get even wilder if you put a 20 in there. ;;)

Hey, hey, hey, this is a family forum! You have to go to Canada for that racy singing and dancing stuff.

@tony22 Nope, not even close. The two have entirely different hardware.

Paul, I guess I’m a little worried by that. Does that mean one could be theoretically “better” than the other? My question has nothing to do with the obvious interface differences between an intended internal model versus external model, but rather with respect to how the data is received off the network and then processed and delivered to its destination.

JRMC allows you to apply volume levelling to all analysed files.

@tony22 Well, there’s certainly that possibility since one is very different than the other in most respects. Only time will tell. I wish I had a better answer but I can assure you we will tweak both to sound excellent.

Will the Bridge (current or next version) be able to play a streaming site like TIDAL? That is stream from my office computer to my living room DS?

Answer to both is yes.

but I’m wondering if a new and improved IPad controller is coming, using mconnect HD is the best Ive found, works fine but not happy with some features.

OK; how exactly does one stream Tidal to the Bridge? Does this require the use of a computer rather than a NAS? I currently use a NAS/Bridge/iPad controller setup which I think does not handle Tidal, but would be happy to be proven wrong. Thanks!

Im sorry you are right, I use the Bridge/NAS for most listening but have kept my Mini for streaming, must be the Holiday rush got to me

To stream Tidal you don't necessarily need NAS or computer, but the player need to be able to access Internet. Linn recently updated both their player/streamer firmware and control point iPad software to enable Tidal streaming directly from Internet. Have been testing it and it works fine.

Thanks rogerdn and jka. Could someone explain at a more basic level how to access a streaming service, since I’ve never done it? Obviously I have to set up an account with Tidal or Qobuz or whatever. Once that’s done, how does it work? I have a Win8.1 computer in the audio rack that I use for ripping vinyl with the NPC, but not for general listening. I could use it for streaming, but how? I have foobar and MinimServer on the computer; the latter does not support streaming services, if I understand correctly. Do I have to own some piece of hardware, such as the Linn that jka mentions, that can access my Tidal account? Or can this be done with software from a computer? Sorry for the elementary questions.

Yes I have a NAIM NDX and they too either have or will shortly have Spotify and I believe Tidal on it, but it doesn’t stream to the Bridge of course.
