George, as Gordon says, try setting the SRC to Core Audio. On mine, this gives the option “Do Not Upsample”. With those settings the bit perfect test works for me.
Ted, it says 24/96. Is it supposed to display “bit perfect” on the DS screen? I’ve yet to see it.
Gordon, It was set to Core Audio. I’ve tried all four. I’ve set it back to Core Audio.
Is it my imagination or is the volume control supposed to be disabled in iTunes for this to work properly? Here are my current settings:
Well, I had to do it. Two weeks with the amazing DS, last night I worked my PWD back in line for a test. Bleh. Lasted 2 minutes. Back in line went the DS. Amazing how my PWD can sound so bad when just a few weeks ago it sounded so good!
Job well done, Ted
George, I have Max Bit Depth set to Automatic. If it is padding the files to 32 bits that might prevent you from passing the bit perfect test. I do not have dCS DoP checked (not sure but don’t think it’s supported).

Now I’m getting 16/96 on the display and a crapload of pops. Still no message on the DS screen.
I’m sorry guys, I have to say it…I’m really upset with my DirectStream - it’s causing me to want to finally upgrade my speakers, and maybe get some nicer XLR cables as well. sigh.
Seriously though, I’m still enjoying the music - Just putting on the hours, hoping for a nice bloom sometime soon.

I warned y’all in March about the DS causing a rethink of our rigs.
not a bad thing, and certainly we seem to be on a better path NOW than “silk-pursing” pure PCM.
Sorry George. Not sure what else to suggest. You could try setting it to 24 bits as that is the actual file size. I have also gotten a lot of pops from iTunes/BitPerfect, which is one of the reasons I am using JRMC Mac. I was never able to figure out what was causing the pops (should have, but didn’t, reach out to the BitPerfect folks).
George
you could try a free trial of Audirvana plus and try it with iTunes integration turned off. It works only like a simple playlist ( from finder) but it might provide a settings clue.

Yeah, I had a feeling this was going to happen. The transparency and great imaging of the DirectStream make me want speakers that throw a better 3d image. My M-T-M speakers sound amazing, but don’t throw an image as well as I’d like - so I’m moving on to the Decware HR-1. I’ve got this coming in next week.
Such beautiful wood. No way these puppies will disappear in your room
+1
Pretty.
Yeah, that’s what I thought as well, so I had to jump at the chance of owning them.
Bob Ziegler who designed and built them is a master of veneer. The insides are supposed to be a complex set of chambers - and at the top is a hand made radial speaker that emanates sound 360 degrees.
If these don’t get me a more 3d holographic sound with the DirectStream DAC and Decware Mystery Amp, I’m really going to have to completely reevaluate my room as I can’t blame equipment at that point. LOL
Now you see how I felt.
I’m a first time PS Audio customer and buying the Directstream was a big step up for me coming from a NAD M51 DAC.
To put my impressions into some context the DACs I heard/auditioned before I decided on the DS were:
Phasure NOS
AMR-777
Chord QBD76 HDSD
PDX optioned up with Duelund caps and Phillips valves
Killer DAC
The last two are Australian-made DACs. Arguably, these are some of the best DACs in the sub-$10,000 category.
After about 200 hours of play time I have no hesitation in saying that the DS was significantly better than all of them. Admittedly, I heard these DAC’s in different systems but if anything, those systems had better components, cables etc than mine.
I’m not very good at articulating what I hear from the DS but words like pure, pristine, clean, detailed, smooth come to mind. There is no trace of digital harshness that I was getting from the NAD. The sound stage is amazing, its wide, deep and expansive and my standmount ML2 Limited speakers have no trouble filling the room which is quite large at 30 feet by 20 feet across.
If this DAC keeps improving with play time as others have reported then this is one amazing unit.
I would like to add my congratulations to Ted and Paul on a brilliant product.
Thank you.

And thank you for posting and giving us a try. We’re glad to welcome you into the family.

i have a really nice pic af system I listened to. But of course I cannot figure out the encryption method to post a pic from my iPad.
Anyway. For me the best imaging all around is a dipole of what ever kind it portrays to be the best imaging. The speakers in the link also had some really stabile imaging as well. Boxed speakers for give a dual stereo sound better then headphones by far but not the whole show for me. It could be my kind of hearing as well. I,listen to the Wilson alexia xl a few times and they just do not have that kind a real staging I like. But this is all about what we like and the speakers in the post above not mine the other guys really looked cool. The linked ones from me looked really cool too. But I like my pairs of infinity,s best .
I had a AMR 777 a while back nice DAC but it was part of the plastic DAC group for me where the DS is real fruit not the fake stuff ona table .

I had my SALK SOUNDSTAGE 8 "s for only 2 months before the DSD , I did like having with the MK.II , the choice of NATIVE & NATIVE X, but now the DSD with the new 61 firmware, I have a 3D soundstage , but it seems that I have to turn up the volume on the preamp just a click or two , to have that dynamic punch. I do keep the DSD all the up to 100 and just 1 week ago I added the P5 to my system a listening enjoyment I just SIT BACK AND HEAR MUSIC
It makes sense you need a tad bit higher preamp setting; the DS at 100 is equivalent to the PWD at 95.
