DirectStream DAC MKII Beta Tester Reviews

Ted will this update be on the first full update on the usb thumb drive stick? I have always purchased the USB thumb drive to update JR.

I am blessed again as I have loaded both the UI update to 2.3.3 and the fpga 178 and am not having any issues.

I would think If it’s a software problem it would affect every unit, which isn’t the case.

Hit or miss seems to be the PS Audio mantra
hope it gets straightened out!

Could still be another symptom of the last-minute rework around the attenuator/muting circuit that Paul mentioned above, some units ok, some not after the rework.

MK2 off and unplugged all night. Turned it back on this morning and no change. Still no sound from any input even though the MK2 shows it is receiving a signal and DSD files still not recognized, sho as 325.8/24.

Since some units work fine after the update and others don’t, one question that comes to mind is what is different between the units that work after the upgrade and those that don’t?

My unit has not been sent back in for any hardware repairs.

If it’s not a software issue doesn’t that most likely point to some units having hardware issues?

Not that it affects the real problem you are having, but as I already mentioned the Mk II is showing what it’s getting, it can’t convert DSD to 352.8k PCM. If the display says 352.8k then something upstream of the Mk II is sending it 352.8k. If you are using DoP then any volume control or other signal processing will convert double rate DSD to 352.8k, but if, as I think you mentioned earlier DSD64 and DSD256 also show up as 352.8k then something is explicitly converting to 352.8k rather than it just being a rogue volume being applied up stream.

Just checking, are there people that still have the no sound bug after they received their MkII back from PS Audio service?

We are patiently waiting for ours to return.

It may have been said, but I get a red connection light when there is no connection as well, so a bit confusing with non-PS Audio devices. I guess the sample rate would then be the confirmation?

We don’t have control of non-PS Audio devices, but yes if there’s a sample rate then there’s a good connection. The bug which doesn’t show the sample rate (if valid) when the light is red has been reported.

I have one of the first two units sent back for fixing. It has been back running for two days without issues. It had FPGA178 installed with version 3.1. I updated FW to version 3.2 yesterday and everything runs fine.

I will continue to feed with streaming and discs with different formats to see if any problem will pop up.

can someone share the UI FW, 2.3.0
thus to allow the Mk2 back to the original working configuration (2.3.0 +fpga 173)

The DSD issue has been solved. You were correct. It was upstream of the DAC. After the upgrade, ROON had disabled the DAC. I had to go into the ROON settings and enable the driver/DAC again. What I didn’t know was that farther down in the settings menu at had set DSD playback scheme to “Convert to PCM”. Once I changed that setting to “DSD over PCM” the MK was now being sent DSD files and properly recognized DSD 64, 128, and 256.

However, the no sound issue remains.

FW V 3.2? Is that a typo? The version I downloaded from the website and what my MK 2 is showing is 2.3.3

Yes, I have been running FPGA version 178 on my MK II for a while. I have just put the control processor code 2.3.3 and now my system is muted. I have now reverted to 2.3.0 and I get sound. Apparently, they didn’t test well enough on unmodified boards.

The 2.3.0 code is below:

my memory is bad from a day ago. Yes, FW2.3.3 and USB3.02 (I had 3.01).

An excellent recording. The Duke was also a gift to SQ, especially considering the vintage.

Highly recommended: Masterpieces by Ellington. Terrific fidelity and soundstage - both the CD and the SACD. With both combo and full orchestra worked into these masterful arrangements, it’s great for critical listening.

The bass clarinet on the opening “Mood Indigo” makes my wife cry. The first time it played, she came all the way upstairs to ask what was playing. Yvonne Lanauze on vocals makes the room ring like a bell.

I’m in the same spot as @mlundy57. Tried everything that @mlundy57 has, including the overnight. No sound from any source or port, tho it’s got lights and sample rate. Checked both sources on MKI, and they’re fine: PST and Mac mini/Audirvana. Made sure the USB driver reloaded on the Mac/Audirvana. Tried all cabling and settings with unusual OCD-ness to make sure I’m not the problem, at least with this beta test.

AND, the unit is now cool to the touch, where it was >100ÂșF before. Hardware issue? Noting that “time to silence” was shorter and shorter with each new startup.

Suggestions or next steps?
