DirectStream DAC MKII Beta Tester Reviews

Review 2:

A month in - this is one of those, “Now I remember why I’m doing this” things.

It’s nice to feel apart of something that we enjoy. There are so many different manufacturers and combinations of equipment that could work with the MK2. It would not make financial sense for a small audio company to have all the different combinations that their customers could provide. How many companies can you talk with the head digital dude or ceo on a regular basis.

Ted,

Aurender support engineers did some remote diagnostic work and I received this update from them today:

" Based on the information I received from our engineers, the problem appears to either be the USB cable or a USB setting on the PS Audio DAC. The Aurender sees a USB 1.0 full speed connection instead of a USB 2.0 connection. So this will limit the output to 96khz/24bit, as you described in your last email. Do you have another USB cable you could try? Are there any advanced menus of the DAC to change USB Class 1 to USB class 2? (that is what it is called on Rotel units anyway). It may be called something different by other companies.

Kind Regards,

I don’t have a spare usb cable on hand, but the one I am using is a Cardas Clear Hi-Speed (http://cardas.com/clear_hs_usb.php) which has been passing everything up to and including 2xDSD to my Matrix. So I’m assuming we can eliminate a potential issue with the cable but correct me if I’m missing something.

Any idea why the MKII’s usb input would show up as usb class 1? Also, I’m not ware of a menu setting that would affect this, correct?

Thanks

It seems unlikely to be your USB cable just as it’s unlikely that it’s only your unit that seems to be not supporting and/or reporting that it supports USB 2.0 high speed. It might be worth having a $5 USB cable on hand for quick tests, but @barrys or @aaronm might be able to help see if there’s something amiss with the USB configuration.

I scrounged around and found the usb cable that was part of the Matrix’ packaging. I tried it and, not surprisingly, it didn’t make a difference - same result.

I’ve likely posted this before, but Shirley Horn’s vocal on this tasty reading of Stardust on the DS2?..Mmmmmwaaaah😘 Perfection.

Along the same lines - hypnotically beautiful female vocals:

I have had my MK2 for 5 days now and while not listening to music, I have been playing pink noise into it.

I have about 73 hours of pink noise and about 20 hours of listening time. Each day the sound quality has improved significantly.

Within the first 24 hours, I experienced less compressed and more realistic sound quality. The following 24 hours revealed a wider and fuller sound stage with better sound quality and accuracy. The most recent 24 hours have resulted in a settling-in of the DAC with the soundstage, accuracy, and better bass resolution continuing to congeal into this amazing soundstage that is almost unbelievable.

I plan to continue to play pink noise into it until I cannot perceive any further change in the sound quality. I am anxiously awaiting when that will happen and what it will sound like once I reach that point,

A heartfelt thank you to @tedsmith and the rest of the PSA team, who have brought this amazing piece of equipment to life. I am very grateful for all of your efforts and the quality that has resulted.

I plan to continue to play pink noise during my downtime for a few more days, but I can’t imagine how much more it might improve, only time will tell.

Does this qualify as burned-in?

The DLP Version sounds even better than the original LP, but the files are also great.

Mail I got from Aurender yesterday

"Hello,

Thank you for contacting us.

Unfortunately, the PS Audio Directstream is not compatible with Aurender as it does not have Linux drivers. Aurender uses Linux as the operating system.

Aurender, Inc."

And we are honored to have you and the other beta testers on board. What a great community!

yes!

I assume they are talking about their USB drivers. Does this mean that people who have a PS Audio DS DAC should not use Aurender products and visa versa.

Thanks.

I was wondering about the Linux OS on the Aurender. I sent that info to PS Yesterday…

Why would linux be such a problem? That’s really lame if so. I love Linux.

It means PS Audio will have to write Linux driver. It’s not that hard, at least it shouldn’t be lol

Fingers crossed. It would be a shame otherwise, as Aurender makes some nice gear with great support.

no, it was about streaming DSD Native from Aurender to DSD Dac via USB

yes, I hope @tedsmith will help us sometime with DSD Native stream from Aurender to Mk1 and Mk2 Dacs
