DirectStream DAC MKII Beta Tester Reviews

For what it’s worth, I just loaded 2.3.3 and Antero without issue. In fact i have had no issues from day one, other than a very slight hum if I put my ear on the unit. I normally sit a few feet from the unit to watch TV, and I definitely cannot hear the hum from my comfy little chair. I’m still evaluating the SQ of Antero.

I use I2S via the Matrix (which I still prefer) and USB as inputs.

I guess as an outsider looking in the PST seems it could be a ringer for the PS Audio DAC’s and lack some of the issues others without the PST may be experiencing. Thanks for clearing that upTed.

Ah, now I perhaps see where you are coming from.

They definitely use the same case and display. They share no hardware inside but do share hunks of library code for the display and controls. Most of that code comes from the recent Stelar DAC rather than the PST, tho they are trying to have one framework.

My skunk werks theory on my part again. Vince said there isn’t a lot of participation from PS employees with their experience with the MK 2 which is obvious. I was curious if there was an inter company only forum/chat and that may be the reason they don’t post a lot on the public forum. Again crazy question but it was a thought for the lack of participation. Thanks again.

Probably something like Slack.

If there is an inter company forum I’m not saying they are being secretive but probably don’t want to post their own findings twice in two different threads.

Of course not. People are working and expect some level of privacy. Clearly whatever they write is the property of the company, but teams should feel free to speak their minds in an open and constructive way without the interpretation of thousands of onlookers.

Especially with the group of “the sky is falling” posters that have shown up in this thread.

No, I’m the weirdo, most engineers don’t have the time to read the forum and get work done. I need mental breaks and Paul is thankful for my participation. Darren and others whose names are not public yet have taken the Mk II home and listened and verbally reported in various meetings. Random people have used it in Music Room One.

Engineers use tools designed for collaborative engineering for work.

That was my approach all by luck. A new in box USB drive not reformatted. Glad you’re able to figure that out and share for others

We are thankful. You are heart and soul of this product and the reason so many are envious to own one!

Mine has changed during burn in and sounding a bit shrill today. I was hoping for less FPGA burn in complexity with firmware changes. It is either that or some antibiotics prescribed for sinus infection messing with auditory physiology. The other sources in my system are not giving a similar response. My Roon radio burn in stream kicked off line from running my Tidal account elsewhere. hopefully it is a short lived turn.

Definitely antibiotics mess with hearing. Long term antibiotics can lead to hearing loss. They really got my mother when she had MRSA. Shorter term isn’t necessarily an issue, but my ears feel clogged on them.

I got more irritated also with the way dchang05 was getting similar treatment. I am not going to grind that axe anymore. Realizing a lot off folks might not have had diversity inclusion training from the workplace, nor much experience in situations where all inputs can be useful to solution development. Thusly think it is all protocol and structured scientific method based in solution development. If you’re only tool is a hammer everything becomes a nail. I have been part of many red team problem solving projects and the most successful ones are the diverse working groups willing to brainstorm a solution by looking at all the data discussing through solution development. Usually when solution is left to just narrow engineering thought the course is a long line of design changes met to resolve the same problem six or seven times.

It is quite clear we were all given several different configurations of the MKII related to how units were hastily reworked and filled with variation.

If we all thought the same about things the world would be a pretty boring place. I realize it was not intentional by any one person. Sometimes there is only one way to solve a problem. But to box yourself in as one approach early on can be misguided in the end result where other better options were wrote off or never realized or at least listened to.

Ok off that soapbox.

Yeah I don’t get the difference in pitch between sources and sensitivity to theMKII stream suddenly snd mot others. But there is a lot of information this MKII has revealed not in the other sources.

I to have heard of people losing hearing from long term antibiotics.

Sorry if this is discussed before, but anyone running into problems with USB where everything was playing fine and randomly the device would get disconnected and the only way to fix is to unplug and plug back the USB to the DAC? I used Jriver and play a few tracks fine, then stop for abit, and cannot start unless I replug the USB. When I experienced this, Windows also cannot output sound to the device.

Thanks

Edit And I think I just experienced the muting issue! This is with the latest update too… guess this one is going back to the mother ship for some TLC.

Hi All, looking forward to getting home this week and unboxing my MKII that was shipped the other week… don’t know if that makes it late-beta or early production. I know that folks like @Peter_B and @luca.pelliccioli in Europe have units coming… maybe some folks down in Oz do too… I think in that order as the Netherlands seems to get everything first overseas given their logistics hub advantage.

We do have a separate MKII modding thread now, which was a good suggestion: Modding DirectStream DAC MKII - Audio Components / DACs - PS Audio

I am tempted to make a new thread called: “DirectStream MKII DAC Production Launch”. But before I start asking questions like how to format a USB stick to update the firmware… like does it have to be FAT32, since some folks have trouble with exFAT?.. I want to see if PSA put any extra instructions in the box, not covered in the manual.

Although I was hoping for a Christmas AirLens beta unit, I appreciate PSA not rushing units out before they are ready. Hopefully PSA can kick off the AirLens beta forum thread with guidance on how to keep it focused. Maybe even there should be separate threads for upstream/downstream software compatibility vs. hardware accessories like cables. I am OK to keep those together. But it may not help the engineering team sort through the items! Certainly, I think discussion of alternative, not complimentary streamer products should be in another thread once we get to beta.

Anyway, my thanks to all you beta testers and to @tedsmith and to everyone back in Boulder. Wishing you all the best listening for the holiday season!

Go for it! Will be great to drag in the production launch manual and the experiences and questions people might have as they unbox and try out the general release version of the DS2 - and for PS Audio to flag of any updates as they arise?

Done. Here is a link: DirectStream MKII DAC Production Launch Start-up - Audio Components / DACs - PS Audio
