Directstream Mk 2 observations

Today I am exploring vinyl, whose playback I run into the DSD Mk2 via the NuWave Phono Converter and its I2S connection. I bought another Phono Converter as my original is in Boulder for possible repair; I’ve run this one in a few weeks and it is now all it can be.

With all inputs and outputs grounded except the I2S for the Phono Converter. . .I’m getting awesome sound. Perhaps even more so than the improvement with the PWT. I’m very happy with this. . .if it gets even better. . . wow.

The CD drawer on my Wadia 860/1 (860 upgraded to 861) stopped working several years ago. Fortunately I had a basement to stick it in rather than toss it. I had assumed it was unfixable given its age and Wadia going through a lot of changes. Then in December I reached out to George Meyer AV to see if it could be fixed. The answer was “probably” so I sent it in and they fixed it. It does still sound great, although I have limited use for it given all my discs are now on my hard drive.

Also use George Meyer and they did mods on my two DSD 1’s.

About 250 hours in and I think a bit more bass has arrived. I’m so tempted to pop in the Audio Magic M-1 but will at least wait til early next week, Tuesday maybe.

Please wait a few days longer (about 5 days I believe) for the bass to develop into a smooth and detailed bass. Otherwise you won’t know what you’re comparing and consider the result stemming from the ‘wrong’ source.

I do see your point but. . . to me if it sounds great it is great and I don’t need to know the exactness. I already know that the M-1 fuses are “for me” and will be an increase in improved sound and I already know I’m keeping the DAC.

I’ll probably hold off. I just really do want to see what the fuse does for this component as I have not had a fuse change in my other two Mk1s, and the fuse has been sitting in its box staring at me for two months.

This is good to know, since since the CD drawer on my 861 stopped working a couple months ago. I’m assuming the issue is the belt is slipped or stretched so there is enough torque. Time to talk to George Meyer AV…

I was pleasantly surprised at the noticeable difference between the MK1 and the MK2 - its makes a huge difference and I wasn’t expecting that.

The difference is really apparent - to the point that on the first track I played, my wife was commenting on it and pointing to where the tympani are in the soundstage. The track was on The Golden Ring: Great Scenes from Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen which I was using to see how the MkII would deal with a fairly congested score with zero break in time. It has only gotten better as the break in continues.

And this is why I am waiting to save for the MK2 rather than buying a used MK1 now. If I bought a MK1 I know I would never be satisfied knowing the MK2 exists.

Yes. They are both incredible DAC’s. I am the proud owner of both the modded MK2 and MK1. They both make a very realistic sound stage.

My stock MK1 was sent to PS Audio today for trade in. That was an incredible deal in January.

With my Wadia 860/1 I think they replaced some small gears as well as belt(s). The biggest cost was labor. You can call and ask to speak to George Meyer’s Wadia specialist to get an idea of what’s likely involved. Not cheap but I thought it was worth it.

Glad to hear the positive feedback on the Mk II.
My reply relates to the Solti Golden Ring SACD that you were using to assess the SQ. To my ears, on a Luxman D10x, the SACD has a dramatically different signature to the 2012 reissue for both the SACD and CD layers. It also came with a booklet that was misprinted in that the page numbers were not sequential. This problem was highlighted on Amazon. I have been corresponding with Decca/UMC UK for the past month or so about a replacement booklet that is printed properly. They intimate they have one but they never send it. Have you had these issue and if so, were you able to resolve it?

Let us know how you like the M1 fuse. I installed a purple in my modded MK2 and am liking it. It seemed to add another layer of detail.

I will. I have a mix of Purple and M-1 in my system right now–had a Purple in my P15, changed to M-1, had a Purple in my Decware ZROCK2, changed to M-1, have Purple in my PST, Decware ZTPRE and Decware SE84UFO3 Monoblocks. I think I prefer the M-1 sound. . . so another M-1 seemed in order.

Are you planning on trying the purple for comparison?
I also have a beeswax fuse I want to try.

No, I pretty much have a handle on the Purple sound via long use, and I prefer the M-1 sound.

Any plan to give SR Master a try?

No. I’m not a fan of the price, and liking M-1 more than Purple plays in as well. At this price point I would be more inclined to try the Swiss Fuse.
