Is there supposed to be any kind of feedback that something has been turned on or off? I hit i2s-1 twice and I get the message Auto Optical. I press various buttons and nothing useful is indicated. I shut down, disconnected optical and restarted and still the same Auto Optical is displayed…
Thanks for checking the behavior. I just tested it without the HQPlayer with different sources.
Interestingly the pop noise occurring seems to depend on the player or source in my environment.
When I used ultraRedu with a roon endpoint, I heard the pop noise whenever the file was switched to DSD including DSD to DSD. Although, I didn’t hear the pop from DSD to PCM or PCM to PCM.
However, when I connected my Windows 10 PC to the DSDAC MK2 using the roon bridge and the new PS Audio ASIO driver, I didn’t hear the pop noise.
NOTE: I turned off the auto-input feature but the results were the same.
For now, I will just stick to I2S with my ultraRendu and just connect to my PC with USB.
You must hit it twice in a row. This is covered in the manual
It will say “Auto TOSLink” or whatever when Auto input select is turned on. (Unfortunately, after the screen times out and goes back to displaying the volume level there is no annunciator for Auto input on.) It won’t when you’ve manually selected an input. If auto input select is on, pressing any input select button will turn it off and select what you selected. If auto input select is off: if the currently selected input is I2S1 pressing I2S1 again will turn it on. If some other input is selected, pressing I2S1 once to get to I2S1 and then pressing I2S1 again will turn Auto input select on.
I personally don’t hear the need for the DDC that I own, the KTE SU-2. Perhaps a better DDC might make a difference. In my opinion the USB out of the Signature Rendu SE and the USB input on the MKII are very complimentary making the conversion to I²S unnecessary.
Well this is interesting. I just tried switching between every possible file type with Roon using the USB input and don’t hear anything at all.
I tried switching between all formats below DSD64, such as 44/16 to 192/24, etc… and then between the lower formats switching each one to DSD64-256 such as 48/24 to DSD128.
Odd.
Thanks. Looking forward to not needing a DDC.
Above when you say nothing do you mean no music or no popping?
No popping.
Thanks @vkennedy61 for checking the issue again! Yeah, it is odd… Hopefully it will be resolved with a future update.
Not that I won’t see what I can do to get rid of more pops, but there’s nothing I can do if the source is making the pops. That can happen if the source is misconfigured (or at least not configured to get rid of pops.) For example some sources stop their clocks entirely between tracks. The DAC can’t always correct for that, but I’ll add code to pretend to send 0’s at the old clock rate when a clock stops. Some systems are configurable to do a crossfade at track boundaries. That’s not really much of a problem in PCM, but if the source crossfades two DoP’d tracks you’d get garbage there and once again the DAC can’t tell that anything is wrong and just plays that garbage.
So you might be able to do better than waiting for an update from me on the Mk II and double check these kind of settings in your source.
Thanks @tedsmith for your input! I checked my configuration settings but unfortunately I was not able to resolve the popping.
I’m still very happy with I2S via the Matrix X-SPDIF 2, so I will keep using it instead of USB.
I just ran all the same tests from Roon to an opticalRendu feeding the USB input of a dCS Bartok. I didn’t hear any pops with that setup either.
The only difference in testing is the Bartok only accepts up to DSD128 (most likely the reason I won’t buy one).
Hi
As I have been using the mkl without a preamp I always appreciated the balance control feature on the remote.
Can anybody with mkll (production) advise me if this functionality has been included in the mkll remote ?
Thanks
Do you have a different manual? This is what the manual has to say about Auto Select. Note that there is no info here about secret handshakes needed. And if the info is elsewhere in the manual, why is it not provided under the topic header?
DirectStream MK2 features an auto select input. Using the front panel menu system (or the remote), choose either the specific input you wish or the Auto Select feature. When in the Auto Select mode, DirectStream MK2 will [automaticaly] select the active input.
Note: → typos. Here is info I provided to PSA a month ago about additional typos in the manual. I do not have confidence in the manual.
Page 5 of 24 aka “iii”: Galvanic isolation aids in the reduction jitter and unwanted audio [artifcats].
Page 17 of 24 aka “3 pages after 7 and one page before 8”: DirectStream MK2 provides the ability to connect those inputs to [gound] through the front panel display.
Also, the page numbering is wonky after page 7. The page numbered as 8 is four pages after the page numbered as 7…
Nitpicking, yes. But use of spellcheck is not too much to ask.
Try this.step through every input including the ones you are no using, You will come across another input that shows Auto select. select that one again and it should turn it off!
Cool. Thanks for your patience! I am being shoved off into family activity now. But will get back to my beloved MKII as soon as I can!
Well the MK2 with PST as a source makes ticks when first initializing a disk or changing tracks. These ticks are not heard if you have a pre amp in between.
Currently there is no option for balance controls.
I don’t see why they cannot write code in the UI to enable the balance.
Thanks for your help ! It makes no sense to me why controlling the balance from the remote would not be supported. Maybe they need to sell more preamps
