Very, very wise words indeed!! @Rudolf, what myself or Elk (e.g.) thinks the future holds does not really matter, in a way. I’m sure that most of us older generation folk with a fair amount invested in disks of whatever kind, will be able to continue enjoying them until the end of our lives.
I still think the format’s days are numbered but really, it is irrelevant to our enjoyment of the music right now: Just play the disks; life’s too short!
I really don’t believe it has anything to do with the IR sensor or line of sight. Reason being is I have no other issue with the DMP responding to any other press of other button and I have the remote pointed dead at the DMP every time. The issue is with the round, center “Play/Pause” button - only.
To run this test, you apply on enough pressure to get it to click, which is not much. I just ran this test again before replying. If a minimum amount of pressure is applied, enough to get it to click, then there is the possibility it is not enough to get to button to mechanically trigger the IR signal. Apply a form press and it works every time! Again, it is ONLY the play/pause button that experiences this need to press firmly on the button. If firmly pressed, there is ZERO issue with me getting the DMP to play and pause. A lighter or normal pressure application and I get unreliable functioning of pause/play.
My remote is less than 2 years old, and it still does it. Not a break in issue. Im not sure if it is a bad run of remotes but it is definitely an issue with mine and several others, based on feedback here and in the prior thread.
I would suggest taking another look into this pressure related issue I bring up.
Yes I enjoy my discs very much, even on my old Technics and more recent Yamaha. I’d like to enjoy them on improved new gear, I started investing in stereo gear and liked the DMP SACD I2S concept of PS Audio and simply cannot believe they drop it after a short 2 to 3 year life cycle, that is way too short for equipment in that category. So I hope PS Audio will not abandon the direction they took just 2 to 3 years ago.
They all require holding the play button a little longer to reliably initiate play.
So, at least for me, it is not a mechanical problem requiring extra pressure applied to the button.
Interesting. How long do you hold the button? The reason I ask, is because I have used normal pressure and held the DMP remote down for an extended period of time and it did not initiate the play/pause command.
Do me a favor when you get a chance, if you have not done so already… Lightly press the DMP center play/pause button with just enough pressure for it to click and hold it down without applying additional pressure. I am curious if that gets the command to function.
We all are pressing at different pressures so difficult to fully vet it out unless you deliberately press it softly (still getting the “click”) and no more.
My preference as well, although I rip a good many CDs to a server.
It is interesting the degree to which this appears an emotional issue for many. Rip to a computer, stream, play CDs, hum . . . enjoy whatever works for you.
So the question is will it be a new PS Audio disk player in the future, and if, what formats will it play, as we speak there are currently no PS Audio I2S sources.
Yes, as I have written in other places, there’s a new disc player in the works to replace DMP. It’ll read all formats that make sense, DSD, DMP, FLAC, ALAC, and the usual collection of lossless. It’ll be based on a DVD drive and have some extensive new features
including using it as a ripper for the server, non-destructive EQ on a track by track basis (using DSP) that then tags that track or disc so it will auto play with those settings in the future, perhaps a dynamic compressor to more closely mirror an LP (how
the quietest parts of an LP are made louder to squeeze dynamic range, etc.
Same thing here. At first I thought it was the DMP, and then maybe line of sight, but it only happens on the play/pause button, if I don’t apply enough pressure. Works every time now.
Certainly. But my intent on posting then and now is to broadcast the broader problem. Enough DMP owners have confirmed this same pressure related issue with their remotes to indicate a potential issue with the design/build of this particular model of remote - or at least with this batch of remotes.
The risk with not vetting this out proper on PSA side is the misidentification of the cause. Blaming the DMP firmware/hardware when the problem is a result of a faulty remote does the customer and PSA no good.
It is a slight annoyance for me now that I have identified a work around and I’ll get around to inquiring about a replacement. No guarantee the current inventory isn’t plagued with this very problem.
@Gary_M & @JeffofArabica - same thing here… have used the work around pressure and time frame for so long it’s like it is not broken cause it works. I also use a repeater from our porch and I have to do the same thing. If I don’t it’s even more frustrating. That was a good question… why not get a new remote… I don’t look at it like it is broken, just working it like this… figured when the pressure becomes too much or another remote issue… I have (3) remotes, never thought of trying a different one… I should do that…
I have three of the same generation/identical remotes (DMP, DSJr,BHK Pre) and they exhibit the same issue we are talking about. That is, one click of the Go/Pause center button usually doesn’t make the DMP Go/Pause. A longer, held push usually does. My conclusion is that it’s not an issue with the remotes, rather, probably, as has ben suggested it’s PIC vs. OPPO timing/execution/feedback issue. I’ve brought it up with the PS gang before and I’m sure they are doing what they can to address it
@calord - OK, could be the issue. I have not tried them all so that is a data point. I had not really burned any calories on this since it works with operator re-training; however, it is an issue. IDK… I guess put it on the list and in the mean time… press harder and wait a second or two…
It may be a separate issue you are experiencing than what I am describing. The long press is definitely not the issue with my remote. If I use normal pressure on the pause/play button and get the “click,” then hold it for several seconds, it still will not respond. My play/pause button will only respond to a hard press, and it doesn’t need to be held long. A quick, but hard press will do the trick.
@JeffofArabica I don’t have one of the remotes in question or a DMP but it may be that the switch on the circuit board is too far away from the button. See if you can shim the CB closer or add a small piece of material to the inside of the button. The same fix just worked for me on an ailing garage door opener.
