Thank you for the information, Kyle.
I was curious what people find the best setting for the DSD when using a preamp. My thoughts were to run the DAC at its highest (99-100) outputting from the balanced outputs and let the preamp do its job with controlling the volume. Is this the correct way to maximize noise levels and achieve the best dynamics?
In general yes. With the DS Jr or Huron, Redcloud or Snowmass some prefer the DS’s volume at about 82-86 and the preamp’s volume up a little. In Windom on the Sr I used a feature of the Sr’s hardware “sideways” and I think most will like the volume at or near 100.
There are a few over time that liked 99 better than 100, but I don’t think this is intrinsic to the DS.
Thanks Ted, So for the SR keep it maxed and the JR step it down a bit if I understood correctly. I should be getting my SR later in the week.
What are the output voltages on the balanced outputs on both the SR and the JR? Just curious how the use of transformers in the output stage of the SR differs from the output on the JR?
The Jr and Sr have the same output levels. Both are 1.414VRMS unbalanced and 2.828VRMS balanced. The output opamps in the Jr are fully differential and are designed to look like a transformer.
@tedsmith Hello Ted, I have one question for you.
Today I started to listen my gear (I have a headphone system) and with no music playing I put my amplifier in maximus and notice a hiss, I asked on a topic but I better to ask directly you. It’s okay that noise ? I mean the DAC is on 100 volume and high gain. And I does not annoy me because the headphone must be almost on max to listen it.
Just want to know if this is normal ou a unit issue.
No, everything is probably working as designed. With a normal system with a preamp there’s always a preamp setting that gets the noise floor low enough that it won’t be a problem in normal listening, (there still might be the other problem of not enough gain.)
